Watch: What is Lorde's song all about? We dissect Green Light video

Lorde, the New Zealand musician who shot to fame as a teen singing about getting on her first place, has sent the music industry into whirlwind with her much hyped single, Green Light.
In its release, 20-year-old Yelich-O'Connor, has earned herself another badge for her pop star sash – the break-up song.
While on first listen Green Light feels like an absolute dance pop banger, it's built with punchy and intelligent lyrics to rival any alternative soul-searching tune.

Here are those lyrics, in full (with a few notes):

We order different drinks at the same bars.
I know about what you did and I wanna scream the truth.
She thinks you love the beach,
You're such a damn liar.

Lorde talked about how this song focuses in on the small things that get under your skin. It's a break-up song, with the punches and classic shade thrown at the ex – but lines like this create a more self-reflective piece. She talks about his hate of the beach, essentially saying 'I know you better than she does'.

Those great whites, they have big teeth.
Oh they bite you

That line is brilliant! Great whites, white lies, coming back to bite.

Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you're not in love – no more.
Did it frighten you?
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor
On the light up floor...

Here's where it picks up. Cue piano!

But I hear sounds in my mind,
Brand new sounds in my mind.

Lorde's Green Light has been nominated for best editing at this year's MTV Video Music Awards.

Primarily Green Light's looking at the re-start; how to rebuild after a break up. She discusses the new ideas, new thoughts and as materialises, new music.

But honey I'll, be seeing you, ever, I go
But honey I'll, be seeing you, down every road
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it.

Lorde told Beats 1's Zane Lowe that she had asked herself: "How come this thing is coming out so joyous sounding?"

"I realised this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That's her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that's the song for me," she said.

'Cause honey I'll, come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh I wish I could get my things and just let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it.

Sometimes I wake up in a different bedroom.
I whisper things, the city sings 'em back to you.

Lorde's credited her home town with giving her the space and ideas to write her latest album, Melodrama.

Look at the title itself though, this isn't really a one sided heartbreak song. The singer brings in a self-reflective perspective to the album that she said would be about "really growing up" as a artist and person.

All those rumours, they have big teeth
Oh they bite you,
Thought you said that you would always be in love
But you're not in love no more.
Did it frighten you?
How we kissed when we danced on the light up floor,
On the light up floor.

The rumours, the bumping into your ex on the street - Auckland's not that big a city, really.

But I hear sounds in my mind,
Brand new sounds in my mind.
But honey I'll, be seeing you, ever, I go
But honey I'll, be seeing you down every road
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it

'Cause honey I'll, come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh honey I'll, come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Yes honey I'll, come get my things, but I can't let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
Oh I wish I could get my things and just let go
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it

I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it

She REALLY wants that Green light. After all, Green Light means go.

I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
I'm waiting for it, that green light, I want it
