Speculation is mounting as to whether former Beatles star Paul McCartney is coming to New Zealand.

Rumours are flying that ex-Beatles star Paul McCartney is coming down under.

Frontier Touring posted two puzzling photos on its Twitter page that have prompted fans to speculate whether the star is coming to our shores.

The first picture shows a left-handed guitar with a kangaroo and a kiwi branding. McCartney plays the guitar left-handed.

The second cryptic picture shows a date, June 21, with 9:30pm NZ time and the Australian East equivalent - suggesting June 21 is the date that tickets will go on sale.

Fans were reeling over the news on their Twitter and Facebook feed.

McCartney, recently recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list with a Companion of Honour award for services to music, was last in New Zealand in 1993 as part of The New World Tour.

He was supposed to tour Australia and New Zealand in 2002, however the tour was cancelled after the Bali bombings.
