OPINION:
Something is wrong with the world when a man with a set of lungs like Chris Cornell wants to use a Vocoder to give his voice a computer-generated hiccupped slur.
Before milking the one-note idea that was Audioslave, the voice of Soundgarden recorded two solo albums before Scream, bookending Audioslave's career.
But this record is something else. And not in a good way.
Cornell ditches his rock roots - note the symbolic cover shot of him smashing his guitar - to hook up with hip-hop producer Timbaland to make a pop album.
There might be some logic if this album was released on April 1 and available only until lunchtime.
As it stands, it is a confusing set of nonsense songs in which Cornell attempts to sell his found sound to the tween market.
It's embarrassing, insulting, absurd and yet, in many ways, more interesting than Cornell's last solo album.
Where that plodded along, Scream is right in your face. You'll just wish that it wasn't.
Apparently, it's not just Kanye West who ditches a semi-respectable career for an indulgent stab at directionless pop.

What a terrible review. Not informative at all.
He only claims that this is his best work! God help us when he actually admits to creating some shite! Has Cornell been to Stepford? It looks like him, and it sounds like him, but he's now been turned into an inane caricature of himself. He's not the 1st musician who wrote songs to inspire in their early days, only to write drivel later on whilst sitting pretty on a pile of money; but this is terrible. Why does he feel that he needs a new audience anyway; what's wrong with us Chris? Remember the people who put you where you are & honour us with some decent sounds. Thayil, Cameron and Shepherd - get 'round to Cornell's and kick some sense into him....NOW!
I saw Chris Cornell (for the 4th time) in Philadelphia - he was amazing!! His new stuff is INCREDIBLE his old stuff is INCREDIBLE - he is an amazing artist with an amazing voice. If you don't like the music don't listen to it, but just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't worth listening to.
Chris cornell is a doosh!
It continues to boggle my mind that fans of Soundgarden and/or Audioslave is using this album as a point of reference.
Consider this: "You like pizza, but, someone tells you this certain pizza your being offered has anchovies (and you happen to not like achovies). You can either take the anchovies off or decide not to eat it at all. Timbaland is anchovies in this scenario. You have some sense of what Timbaland's musical direction and production sounds like. So, you don't like "Scream". But you still like Chris. So why entertain listening to "Scream" if that is not your musical taste? This album was not made for you."
I happen to think that this is "one of the best albums of the year" so far. It also inspired me to go back and listen to some of Chris' previous work. My first introduction to Chris was on "The Singles" soundtrack. Though I have not been an intense fan, I am familiar with most of his work. I also happened to like "concept" albums. I also like to hear challenging musical styles that buck the norm from time to time. Clearly, this album would be targeted to someone more like me, than someone who considers themselves primarily a fan of rock.
Sure, for the most part, the lyrics in this album are about relationships (and not necessarily healthy ones). So one could argue that there is a sameness. But isn't that a feature of a "concept album"?
I hope more people discover this album but the after his best solo debut (#10...whatever that means in this sorry state the music business is in), it is struggling to find an audience. Radio doesn't know what to do with it, Interscope was 4 singles deep before releasing the album.
I haven't heard this album yet, but Timbaland should be shot. Let's hope he doesn't take over Dave Grohl next. God forbid.
I enjoy a WIDE VARIETY of music. I listen to quite a bit of Soundgarden,Pearl Jam,WEEN etc... I actually like "Scream"
Yes its different from what we're used too but thats what music is about. CHANGE! EXPERIMENTS! Whatever people. Maybe yall should give it another shot? Sometimes you gotta listen a few times before music sets in your brain!
This album should have been titled Timbaland feat Chris Cornell. Am very disappointed with the album.. Chris. Please stick to the Sound Garden /AudioSlave roots..
I agree with cond0g- why even mention Kanye? Reviews like this are what keep music from evolving.

Kim Thayil, Matty Cameron, and Ben Shepherd (the other 3 members of Soundgarden) got together recently to support Tom Morello's Justice Tour 2009. And yes, Kim Thayil and Tom Morello shared the stage at one point. You can Youtube it. So yeah, that's the closest to a Soundgarden reunion since 1997.
