Raspy-voiced rapper Lil Wayne likes nothing more than to boast, and his favourite self-indulgent statement is that he's "the greatest rapper alive".

While that debate is best left to blog nerds, what isn't debatable is that Lil Wayne is a hugely prolific hip-hop artist who seems to spend more time in the studio than he does sleeping.

In the build-up to Tha Carter III, Lil Wayne mixtapes were being released on what seemed to be a monthly basis and the cough syrup-sipping star popped up on singles for everyone from Beyonce and Kanye West to Usher and T-Pain.

So it's no surprise to hear that when it came to deciding a final tracklist, Lil Wayne had 400 tracks to choose from - a mammoth task he left up to his record label.

Amazingly, the quantity hasn't seen any diminish in quality, and Tha Carter III lives up to the huge expectations being placed on it - as long as you forget about cheesy chart-topper Lollipop and a handful of R&B-assisted songs probably chosen by Universal.

Tha Carter III is packed full of sure-fire hits, like the beautifully bassy A Milli, the Jay-Z-assisted anthem Mr CarterLa La's catchy kindergarten beat and the Kanye West-produced stunner Let the Beat Build.

Then there's Dr Carter, in which Lil Wayne takes on the persona of a hip-hop doctor that helps resurrect flailing rappers, bringing them back to life with his rhymes.

It may be yet another ego-stroking, over-the-top boast - but if anyone's capable of it, it's Lil Wayne.

*Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III is out now through Universal.

This is the worst album I've ever heard. Why would you spend $30 to listen to lil Wayne talk about how good he is? Watch your back Wayne I'm coming for you. C's up

OMG. Any true hiphop head would know weezy is garbage! His random yet lame metaphores are what destroys him as a rapper. And they are played lines!...

The only thing keeping him on the boat is the calm sea that is internet and rap corn heads. I'd like to see a detailed breakdown of one of his tracks with an explanation of why it is such a good track (minus the beat)

He is TOTALLY OVERRATED!!
