First, he dropped out of college. Then he re-enrolled, and - on his third album - finally graduated. Next, Kanye West was supposed to get a "good ass job".

Instead, he's had his heart broken.

Yep, it's been a rough year for the top shelf rapper. His mother, Donda West, died from surgery complications, he's been arrested twice after clashes with paparazzi, and - worst of all, it seems - he broke up with his fiancee, Alexis Phifer.

So it's no surprise that West shelved plans to release the fourth album in his 'college' series, titled Good Ass Job, and recorded an album full of loss, despair, heartbreak - and, erm, robots - in record time.

It's fair to say 808s & Heartbreak - soon to be showcased by West when he performs a two-date New Zealand tour with fellow rapper Nas - is a bit of a downer.

"How could you be so heartless?" a mournful West asks on Heartless, one of several spiteful tracks aimed at his ex that punctuate the album. And that's when he's in a good mood.

The other notable feature is the extensive use of Auto-Tunes - the robotic voice distorting programme favoured by chart heavyweights Lil Wayne and T-Pain that's used on each of 808's 11 tracks.

Listening to what sounds like a robot moaning about its love life sure does get tiring, and when gruff-voiced rapper Young Jeezy pops up on standout Amazing, his non-altered vocals cut through the monotony like a knife to the heart.

But, this being Kanye West, 808's production is stunning, especially on minimilist meltdowns like Love Lockdown, Coldest Winter and Robocop.

"Who knew she was a drama queen that'll turn my life to Steven King," West sings in the later. "You like the girl from Misery." Ouch.

Despite the heartache, West hasn't forgotten about crafting hit singles. With its throbbing bassline and robotic vocals, Paranoid is 808's answer to Graduation's hit single Stronger. Daft Punk would be proud.

It's not his best work, but don't worry Kanye. If you never end up getting that job, this music thing might work out for ya.

3 stars? obviously who ever posted this review doesnt have a taste for hip hop, or how its currently evolving. i think most rappers only cater to one specific audience when they drop albums. kanye however is just on another level! id give him 5 stars for honesty! this album is so honest you almost wana cry in some parts. its also clever and origianl!! we need to respect artists that are original. everybody's hating on kanye cause hes cocky. in my opinion its better to be upfront and honest than hide hidden agendas. i respect kanye cause at the end of the day he wakes up every morning living his dreams! peace yo and enjoi this album!

Everyone seems to be on this album... To tell you the truth, the beats are good. The auto tune is not. Lyrically, Kanye has never been the strongest. And now he's gone and made an emo album, you might as well call him the Coldplay of Hip Hop!

I like Kanye's album. I can listen to it all the way through and relate a little bit. I know how it feels to have your heart broken, and man di Kanye have a lot of that in the past year or so. I think this is his best one yet. Keep 'em coming Kanye!

In my opinion, the most brilliant release of 2008 by a long way. He is surely a step above all other pop artists at the moment.

For a rapper who can't really sing to bring out something with this much melodic brilliance is just a reminder of his talent.

Yes, the auto-tune is cringeworthy in parts, but anyone who listens to this with an open mind and appreciates quality talent can't possibly help but realise this is very very good.

9/10

Yea, the music has a totally different sound to it than his stuff usually does, but all the songs kind of blend in together as if to form one big mournful song. they don't really distinguish themselves that well... there are a few really individually excellent tracks, and we all know how clever he is, but the album as a whole could do with being more diversified. not my favourite kanye work at all.

Great aretist can do it all amd Kanye did just that on this album. Sure its not the Kanye West were all use to, but I know I don't care cause this is the Kanye West I've always known. Whether he is singing or rapping, he's a great artist. Keep it comin Kanye!!!

Worst Kanye effort to date... Whats with the stupid robot voice and totally mundane beats and rhythm. Completely unimpressed with this album, has none of the cleverness that his previous albums had shown and instead he has just gone with some lousy mainstream sound. With previous records he was leading the pack, with this one he would rather just let his reputation carry him.

Ive never liked Kanye as a person but I loved his music this album takes away the good (Music), leaves the suck(a cocky whineing wuss of a rich boy)and adds in an annoying, grating robot voice.

I would give it a 4/10
