NIGHT SWIMMING
Young Lyre
(Liberation)

Danceable indie synth-pop from an Auckland five-piece whose smooth sound has been honed since winning Rockquest as a school band and whose decision to change names three times (The Frisk was a previous incarnation) hasn’t prevented them from supporting big-name touring acts such as Train, Green Day and Kaiser Chiefs.

Last year’s Cinema Smile and this year’s Make Light videos both got decent coverage online and on music TV – which, in turn became good turntable-time - so this first EP should prove a good coming of age.

Their trick is to weave their catchy-as-all-heck metronimic guitar lines around beach-dancing crowd-pleaser lyrics, providing enough passion, skill and positivity to keep the cool kids happy and the happy kids cool.

Great local sounds from a band which deserves to get its first full-lengther out there soon.
