Staff at Radio New Zealand have been called to a series of meetings today regarding a proposal to restructure the senior management team.

It is understood staff at the public broadcaster received an email this morning calling them to the meetings.

Radio NZ communications manager John Barr said the restructure was "only a proposal" and no further comment would be made until staff had been consulted.

He would not say if redundancies were part of the proposal that is understood to not affect front-line staff.

Last month Radio NZ chief executive Paul Thompson told the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Conference in Glasgow that Radio NZ was in a "vulnerable position" because of its under-performance on the internet.

"Our website is barely relevant as a news and information source and has a small audience," he said.

"The reason for this is simple. As an organisation we have valued our radio listeners far higher than we do our online audience."

He noted a transformation within Radio NZ to become more audience-led was needed and would be "messy at times" but was necessary.

"While this turmoil is painful and disruptive, it also creates an array of opportunities for those media organisations who seize the day," he said.
