New Zealand's warrior princess is to join the cast of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

TV Guide today reported Lucy Lawless, the former Xena: Warrior Princess star, will be joining the US television series for its second season airing in September.

Marvel was remaining tight-lipped about the actress's role, and how many episodes she'll appear in, the Huffington Post reported.

Lawless's other roles include Spartacus, Battlestar Galactica, and Parks and Recreation.

She is also an environmental campaigner and Greenpeace ambassador.

In October last year, she spent 30 minutes locked in a mock prison cell as part of a worldwide protest calling for release of the "Artic 30" -- 30 men and women, including two Kiwis, detained by Russian authorities for Greenpeace activism.

The ABC show features a league of Marvel superheroes fighting world threats following an epic Battle of New York.

The show's first season finale aired on TV2 on July 13.
