Lucy Lawless film new show in Auckland
Kiwi actress Lucy Lawless is starring in a major new US television series currently being filmed in Auckland.
Production of Ash vs Evil Dead started on Wednesday and is expected to take the better part of the year.
Three hundred mostly local crew are working on the 10-part series at a repurposed warehouse in Penrose and at multiple locations around the city.
In Ash vs Evil Dead, American actor and director Bruce Campbell reprises his role from the original Evil Dead trilogy of movies.
Ash is an aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead.
When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons.
Lawless, star of the television series Xena: Warrior Princess and Spartacus, plays the mysterious Ruby who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks.
The series is being made by US entertainment group Starz.
One of its producers is Rob Tapert, who worked on the original Evil Dead movie and has produced a number of television series in New Zealand including Xena.
He is married to Lawless.
Screen Auckland manager Michael Brook said Ash vs Evil Dead was major boost for the local industry.
"It's the kind of production that can really make a difference in terms of... providing good employment," he said.
"We're really pleased because it's another production involving Rob Tapert. He's done an incredible job in bringing an amazing amount of work to Auckland over the last 15 to 20 years," Brook said.
Other international filming projects Screen Auckland has helped facilitate in the city in the past year include the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Power Rangers, and the fantasy series Shannara.
