Five months after the 'final episode ever' screened on New Zealand television, Channel Ten in Australia have announced that Offspring will be back for a sixth season in 2016.

Offspring follows 30-something obstetrician Nina Proudman and her family, mixing conventional narrative drama with flashbacks, graphic animation and fantasy sequences.

The series became became one of Australia's most successful dramas and was syndicated to a total of 11 countries including Sweden, Israel and Portugal.

In October last year it was announced that Offspring would not return for a sixth series in a cost-cutting measure for Network Ten's in-house production company.

The last episode of season five aired on TVNZ in April.

Although the last episodes saw storylines for the main characters resolved, satisfying both fans and critics, Offpring afficionados are delighted that the drama is back in production.

It was unclear whether series six would be picked up by a New Zealand network.
