Political television show Back Benches will be back on our screens from early next year.

The show is also expected to return to Wellington's Backbencher pub, which was badly damaged by fire in June. The pub has been closed since.

Back Benches gained a strong following before the demise of TVNZ 7 in June.

Prime channel manager Kathy Wright said the show had now secured funding from Sky and New Zealand On Air.

"TVNZ will produce the show for us and it will air on Prime on Wednesday evenings, with a repeat on TVNZ Heartland," she said.

TVNZ Heartland channel manager Philippa Mossman said Back Benches was one of the most talked about shows on TVNZ 7.

"We're glad to see this new chapter open for it, with scheduling on both Prime and TVNZ Heartland."

The Backbencher pub's managing director Alistair Boyce said repair and renovation work was well under way. It was hoped the pub would reopen early next year.

"Obviously we hope to be the venue for Back Benches when it returns. It should all fit in quite well."
