Now The CW, the channel Supergirl will air on in the US has released new footage that gives some indication about how Hoechlin will approach the role.

The CW has released an early scene from the first episode of season two, as well as a trailer for the season.

The last actor in the role, Henry Cavill (who played Supes in Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice), has copped criticism for his brooding, angry take on the character.

Hoechlin's approach - at least, what we've seen of it - has been compared to that of Christopher Reeves, who won accolades with a more goofy, lighthearted approach.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hoechlin said Reeve was his favourite actor to portray superman, but he had made a conscious effort not to copy any previous portayals.

"It's Superman as I think he was intended to be," Hoechlin said of his version, "which is just an incredible symbol of hope to kids that they can do anything, that they can be good people, and that good people can triumph over evil. You don't have to be dark and brooding and always in this state of masculine toughness".

Hoechlin's performance has been so far well-recieved. David Opie at Movie Pilot wrote: "Now that we've seen the Big Blue in action, it looks like Hoechlin will nail the role in every way that Cavill failed to do so".

Watch Hoechlin in action in the season premiere of Supergirl from 7pm on October 11 on TVNZ On Demand.
