HBO freezes out fans to reveal Game of Thrones air date

Game of Thrones fans, clear your schedules: HBO has announced the release date for the hit television show's highly anticipated seventh season.

All things fire and ice will be back as of July 16.

The release date for Game of Thrones' penultimate season was originally delayed due to the need to film in the depths of European winter.

In true HBO fashion, the release date was announced by no ordinary press release.

Game of Thrones fans had to tune in to a Facebook livestream of a giant block of ice being attacked by flamethrowers in order to be the first ones to learn of the release date.

The release date is July 16, 2017 for the 7th season of Game of Thrones.

The release date is July 16, 2017 for the 7th season of Game of Thrones.

However, some fans became frustrated after the block of ice melted slower than anticipated.  At its peak, the livestream was being watched by just over 1.5 million people.

Game of Thrones season 7 airs in New Zealand at the same time as the US on July 16, 2017, on SoHo and NEON
