Out of context it did not sound good - TVNZ yachting commentator Martin Tasker accidentally making remarks about "doing" a Jewish woman during the channel's live stream of the Louis Vuitton cup.

Tasker and his colleague Peter Lester were chatting on the live stream for around 10 minutes, unaware the microphone was still on.

Tasker yawned on camera between races and told Lester he felt like a pint of Guinness, which would come after a bicycle ride.

They covered a variety of issues from drinking preferences to beauty tips.

Then Tasker made the comment he intended to "do" one of the Jewish women later on.

TVNZ has since apologised for his remarks.

In a statement, Tasker said: "I'm very embarrassed and apologetic - I very much regret the concern my remark has caused.  I had no intention of offending anyone."

Tasker made the reference in regards to setting up an interview with an Israeli journalist but accepted, in the context of the conversation, it could have been misinterpreted, said TVNZ spokeswoman Megan Richards.

Twitter was abuzz with comments about the commentators' chat at the time - one said he was watching Tasker and Lester "talking about nothing."

Another said Tasker "intended to do a jewish woman tonight", and told One News to check its live feeds.

One dubbed the gaffe "Tasker's America's Cup fail".

Tasker is the ONE News yachting correspondent, covering events like America's Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race.

He has worked for TVNZ since moving to New Zealand in 1993, covering his first America's Cup in 1997.

With colleague Peter Lester he commentated and reported from all 10 ports in the latest Volvo Ocean race, and his coverage of the Race's pit-stop in Wellington in 2006 won Broadcast of the Year at the TP McLean Sports Journalism Awards.
