Ever wondered what the going price for an unopened 20-year-old container of McDonald's Mulan movie tie-in SzeChuan dipping sauce is?

If you're a fan of off-the-wall cartoon Rick and Morty you have. And now you have the answer: US$14,000 (NZ$20,940).

According to The AV Club that's how much one Rick and Morty fan paid for a packet of the sauce in homage to a passing reference culled from the cult show's season 3 premiere.

In the episode, perpetually drunk genius Rick complains about McDonald discontinuing the sauce. "They created a new sauce for the McNuggets called the Szechuan sauce," Rick says. "It's delicious, but they got rid of it, and now it's gone. The only place we can try it is in my memory."

In the auction post, the seller says they found the dipping pot in a "really old car" they bought.

"After watching the recent episode of Rick and Morty I went online to see if it was worth anything. Turns out it was. Also this comes with a packet of wasabi as well.

"I hope somebody who wants to eat some 20 year old gnarly sauce gets this... I would prefer not to sell it to a collector."

According to the Chicago Sun Times, fans of the show have been pressuring McDonalds to bring the sauce back, and it might work.

A tweet from the show's official Twitter account even pleaded with McDonalds to weigh in on whether the sauce would come back. McDonalds responded in cartoon kind.
