Fast and Furious, Emma Watson and Trevor Noah pick up history setting MTV awards video


Emma Watson is the first recipient of MTV's non-binary Best Actor award, and has dominated the refreshed awards, for her role as Belle in Beauty and the Beast.

The first MTV Fim and Television Awards took place in a drenched Los Angeles on Monday (Sunday evening local time). The fan-voted awards underwent some changes this year, introducing new award categories and moving to encompass television as well as film. 

Watson also accepted the award for Movie of The Year for Beauty and the Beast. After being reluctantly brought on stage by Watson, director Bill Condon thanked women for his film's success. Women were becoming an ever more powerful force in the film industry, he said. Condon promised the influence of women would force changes in the industry.

During her acceptance speech after winning Best Actor, Watson spoke positively abut the changing perceptions of gender. She thanked actor Asia Kate Dillon who presented the award, television's first openly non-binary actor, saying "thank you for educating me in such an inclusive, patient and loving way".

"MTV's move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different for everyone. But to me it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes and that doesn't need to be separated into two different categories. Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits," Watson said.

The cast of controversial webshow 13 Reasons Why took to stage to award Best Show. Fellow Netflix series Stranger Things took home the Golden Popcorn, a science-fiction horror with a cast of teenagers. 

"Television is an important way for people to connect. Your favourite shows speak to you, engage you and sometimes even challenge you to think differently," 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford said announcing MTV's first award recognising television.

"They spark conversations about difficult topics, social issues or just what the hell is going to happen next," her co-star Dylan Minnette​ continued.

Trevor Noah, host of The Daily Show, picked up the one of MTV's Golden Popcorn trophies for Best Host. Noah was up against personalities including Ellen DeGeneres and John Oliver.

Alongside Last Week Tonight's Oliver and Stephen Colbert of The Late Show, Noah rose to international prominence for his comedic takes of US politics. Accepting the award, Noah thanked his mother who raised Noah, who is black, in South Africa. He also thanked US President Donald Trump.

"Thank you to Donald J Trump for the comedy. The J stands for Je Suis, a lot of people don't know that," he joked.

It was also a big night for the Fast and Furious franchise, which was awarded MTV's "Generation Award".

Vin Diesel accepted the award on behalf of the entire Fast and Furious cast spanning eight instalments. 

"In 2002, I was standing on this stage and MTV had given Paul Walker and I an award for Best Duo, and now 15 years later, I'm with my whole family and you're giving us the Generation Award," Diesel said.
