REVIEW: It was a funeral and a birthday all in one.

The 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, has left the TARDIS in heroic style saving Christmas and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) was there to ease his passing.

I shed a tear in the knowledge that possibly the best Doctor the show has seen in its half century is no more.

Smith had the ability to persuade his audience that he was, indeed, a millennium old man in a very young man's body.

Well, on Boxing Day night on Prime, he discarded that body like a favourite suit too worn and raggedy to patch anymore.
RIP 11. We are already missing you.

Welcome Peter Capaldi, the 12th Doctor, who screams his first few lines like a banshee taken by a madness.

He may be 55, the same age as William Hartnell who created the role in another century, but he is bursting with energy in the same way that  Smith and David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston did before him.

I'm sure the  Doctor, with Capaldi's hands, is in good ones.

The Time of the Doctor dovetails beautifully into the series 7 finale The Name of the Doctor, the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, and probably made no sense to anyone who hasn't seen those.

I loved it, but let's hope new Who next year is more accessible than this.

So many questions have been asked in the years the Doctor has been hanging out with the Ponds, Professor River Song and Clara Oswald and in The Time of the Doctor show runner Steven Moffat  answers so many of them.

Clever old Moffat uses the oldest question at the central plot point and thank heavens for Clara's politic answer. That's all I want to know about my favourite troubleshooting time traveller.

Smith's final episode as the Doctor is a big fat Christmas present for those who have been kept guessing since Smith's first foray in the TARDIS with Amelia Pond.

Smith is at his glorious best in this special, with plenty of reminders of why he might just be the best Doctor yet. Scrub that, he is the best yet and I'm going to miss his portrayal terribly.
