Footage of Wendy Petrie pumping her fist after a live cross during coverage of David Bain's court case has been removed from YouTube.
TVNZ confirmed it had asked the video sharing site to remove the footage, which showed Petrie looking off camera and pumping her fist after delivering a live cross on Friday afternoon - moment's before the Bain verdict was due.
Thinking she wasn't being filmed, Petrie screwed up her face and pumped her fist in a downward motion. Tens of thousands of people tuning in for the Bain verdict saw the error.
TVNZ spokeswoman Andi Brotherston called the footage a "switching mistake" and said the network wanted the footage removed from the internet in case it misled people.
"When somebody posts some of our TVNZ footage on YouTube, it is a breach of copyright. What we generally decide, once we have been alerted to it, is whether or not we want the clip on YouTube.
"With this particular clip of Wendy, we were worried that it could be misconstrued. We didn't want there to be any editorial confusion."
Brotherston said Petrie's fist pump was related to general celebrations by TVNZ's Christchurch news team over their performance - not the result of the Bain trial.
"It was a genuine switching mistake. The crew in Christchurch were pleased the cross had gone nicely and cleanly, and we'd beaten TV3. There had been transmission issues throughout the afternoon."
The footage was a YouTube hit, with more than 28,000 views when it was removed on Monday afternoon.
Copies of the video have since been placed on YouTube and were being displayed on local blog websites.
