Coronation Street star Maggie Jones, who played Blanche Hunt in 830 episodes of the hit British soap, has died at the age of 75.

Jones died in her sleep at Salford Royal Hospital after falling ill in October, ITV.com reported. She had been said to have been making a slow recovery, but deteriorated on Wednesday morning, reports said.

A show publicist told the British Press Association: "Maggie had been making a slow recovery but her condition deteriorated early Wednesday morning and she passed away peacefully in her sleep."

Jones made her TV debut on the show in the early 1960s as a policewoman, and later returned as a shoplifter. More than a decade later she was back to play Blanche.

She became a fan favourite because of her acid tongue and one-liners that included: "Good looks are a curse, Deirdre. You and Kenneth should count yourselves lucky."

William Roache - who played Jones' on-screen son-in-law Ken Barlow, paid tribute to the actress.

"She was a tower of strength, physically frail but mentally strong as an ox and sharp as someone half her age. She had an amazing dry wit and was as funny, if not funnier than Blanche."

Maggie’s agent Katie Threlfall said: "Maggie was a rare treasure; incredibly kind, honest and loved by so many.  It has been such a privilege to work with her, and we will miss her dearly."

RIP Maggie, Coro won't be the same without you :(

Such a shame. Maggie Jones was a fine actress who delivered the role of Blanche with pure perfection.

I agree with one of the previous commenters in that Coro seems to be edging towards the dogs...but it's characters like Blanche, Jack, Rita, Norris et all who make the programme worthy of a watch. At the moment for me, they are my only reason for watching. It has been so ho-hum of late...new writers maybe? I'm not sure.

Blanche is my second favourite of all time after Fred...Those one liners are just side splitting and her timing is pure art.

RIP Maggie... the Street just will not be the same without you.

I would assume Apee that if she has been unwell since October and was only making a slow recovery until her health deteriorated suddenly, that they would have perhaps already filmed her character making an exit of some kind (perhaps you see her walking out of The Rovers and into a taxi off into the sunset), so I guess all they would have to do now is when another character asks after her, is say something along the lines of "she loves it so much there, that she's decided to stay".

Or else perhaps if not, then all they really need to do to get around this one is for one of the characters to inform everyone that she died peacefully in her sleep and others are making her funeral arrangements. Then the next image you see is of her coffin and mourners etc at the funeral. Easy ... simple ...

@Apee #16 - She was written out ages ago on the show - NZ is about a year behind England

Apee   #16   01:42 pm Dec 03 2009

how will they write her out of the show if she is dead?

Leemelon   #15   01:27 pm Dec 03 2009

She was a treasure.

Poor old Blanche! I always loved to hate her on Coro even though she was hilarious! A true symbol of dry English humour, she will be missed, even if she was a nosey old bat!

One of Coro's best characters ever - must have been a joy to write her lines, which she always delivered with such perfect comic timing. Will miss her almost as much as Vera. As long as Eileen stays put, I'll cope... just!
