Shortland Street fans were devastated by the loss of characters Kip Denton and Alice Piper, according to a new survey.

Hundreds of fans of the hit Kiwi soap swamped a fan website with requests for the blonde-haired doctor-and-nurse pair - played by Will Hall and Toni Potter - to be reinstated to the hit show.

Denton and Piper left the show earlier in the year after realising their love for one another while on holiday in Rarotonga.

The findings come after the winners were announced in the fourth annual Shortland Street Fan Awards, held by website Throng.co.nz.

Hospital heartthrob TK Samuels, played by Benjamin Mitchell, snagged the favourite male character award, while the honour of favourite male actor went to Adam Rickitt who plays the criminally inclined Kieran Mitchell.

The socially awkward yet brilliant surgeon Gabrielle Jacobs, played by Virginie Le Brun, who stole the heart of Chris Warner earlier in the year, won the favourite female character category.

Young blonde Kimberley Crossman, who plays Sophie Mckay on the soap, won the title of favourite female actress and also secured the lofty heights of the hottest female award.

Viewers gave the 2009 season an average rating of 7.5 out of 10, down from 7.8 last year.

Only 13 percent of viewers gave the show a perfect 10, down from 19 percent in 2008.

The show's production company South Pacific Pictures said they were always interested to hear feedback from fans.

"It is fascinating to see who has come out trumps in terms of favourite characters and what has affected viewers the most in terms of key storylines.

"2009 has been a huge year for Shortland Street and we can guarantee that 2010 will deliver even more excitement for viewers of the show."

@ JD #2 Ha Ha - me too. I'd rather watch Paul Holmes or Paul Hnery or Mike Hosking than rot my brain watching this pile of garbage they call a TV programme.

In 1959 a study was undertaken on the influence of alcohol on gnats (I kid you not) and it was found that they did not have the same cognitive ability as "sober" gnats-hence the comparason. As for antiques and political commentaries, they offer far more uplifting television than the dross that is called Shortland Street.

I am especially fond if its canting-middle-class-liberal-moralism on EVERYTHING. It´s embarrassing and tedious, as is almost everything on television.

Shortland street must be one of the worse shows ever to hit the tv screens. I find it hard to believe why people watch this crap. The acting is bad, the set reminds me of something out of the 80's and what is it with Wine?. Oh come on kiwis don't drink wine well not like that anyways. Kiwis drink beer or spirits. When young people go back to their flat they sit down and drink wine??? Hahaha yeah tui anyone. The show is to much bs, it tries to hard, it tries to say hey WERE HIP!... Sorry your all Scrubs Shortland St. And all its about is some couple for the week arguing and bit*hing about some other, week in week out same thing over and over with just different characters. Total embarrassing to watch. Both my teenage sons rubbish it as well.

Die Shortland St

I'm surprised there's no mention of Dr Ropata (aka, Jake the Muss).

This show will be an epic fail when he leaves

I didn't realise drunk gnats are known for having a short attention span? What an odd comparison for such an obviously well-educated man.

"Errr, Darling. Some political commentary is on. Fetch the port decanter, would you. Ratherrr."

I watched the very first episode of Shortland Street back in the early nineties. I have only just recently managed to get the vomit stains out of the carpet.
