They will be freaky no more.

Kiwi comedy duo Flight of the Conchords have confirmed long-held suspicions by announcing there will be no third season of their acclaimed HBO television show.

In a message posted on the band's official website, Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement and their collaborator James Bobin said they had decided against returning for a third season.

"We've noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won't be returning for a third season.

The pair said they were "proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended".

"We'd like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist."

The show, which also starred Kiwi comedian Rhys Darby as the band's hapless manager Murray, premiered in 2007 on American cable network HBO, and returned earlier this year for season two for a total of 22 episodes.

It screened on Prime in New Zealand and became a cult hit, with phrases like "business time" being quoted by everyone from sports announcers to office managers.

In previous interviews, the Wellington duo discussed how hard it was for them to write the show and the songs, as well as acting.

Clement had dropped hints a third season wouldn't be made in a November interview with Reuters.

"We've got to write the series, but we've also got to write the songs, and just dividing your time into those two writing tasks is really tricky," he said.

Clement also added that the show might return for a movie or one-off special, but it appears the pair have decided against this.

The band received several Emmy nominations, winning Best Comedy Album at the 2007 awards, and took home four New Zealand Music Awards in 2008.

They released their second album - I Told You I Was Freaky, featuring songs from season two of their show - earlier this year.

Damn, there's a lot of people out there no (or basic) sense of humour! Maybe stick to Will Farrell movies and tv shows with laugh tracks, so it's blatently obvious when you should laugh.

Good on u fellas, was great while it lasted!

Say what you will. They were successful in what they did. No matter who becomes famous, there will always be people who do & do not like your work. It's a matter of opinion. Flight Of The Conchords appealed to a very large market & made a lot of other people laugh. As both writers & actors, they're both very clever people. Also, as much as NZ seems to be prejudiced against american's intelligence, to break into their media & do well, is a HUGE deal & definately not easy. I hope they keep on showing their intelligence in the comedic media, in some way or another. To the people who don't agree with their sense of humor, please realise that it is your own opinion & there are plenty of people who do like it and they're the ones who kept FOTC so strong in the media.

In the poll there is no dislike option. I think people assume just because they're from New Zealand everyone here loves them. I don't. They're kinda predictible and just...not very funny.

it's hard to be honest being a kiwi, the 2 series were just not funny. Maybe they should have been picked up and nurtured by a UK network, then maybe greatness would have followed. There's talent there, give them time

Hire more writers. Make it happen. They're throwing away a gold mine. Hopefully they keep writing songs - because that's where their genius really is.

"Like great British comedies - the Office, Fawlty Towers, Extras, Absolute Power - the Conchords are doing the sensible thing and ending their comedy show on a high."

Such a shame that they couldn't manage to actually be as funny as well - then the comparison might work!

Comparing these two twits to works of genius like those mentioned is like comparing Tui to Tattinger!

Thank god for that.

If only they were ever funny.

Probably a good idea as season 2 really tapered off there towards the end. There were some good moments though. Season 1 was awesome.

To niceguy24, Friends-type humour?!?!?!?

Friends was full of easily digested one-liners and while I found it funny it was definitely comedy lite. A Friends one-liner wouldn't feel at home on FOTC. Imagine Murray doing the roll call with Chandler and Joey and you'll know what I'm getting at. Ross is probably the only character shy enough and self-deprecating enough to slide right into the cast and not be noticed.

I wish them luck in the future.
