EXCLUSIVE: Survivor's newest millionaire Natalie White says aligning yourself with a stronger player is a legitimate way to win the hit reality show.
The former Foa Foa tribe member was given the title of Sole Survivor in the final of Survivor: Samoa after a jury of mostly Galu members voted for her over finalists Russell Hantz and Mick Trimming,
Hantz was expected to win, and White has received criticism for her gameplay from both fans and fellow contestants.
Hantz, who won the consolation Fan Favourite prize of $100,000, told Stuff.co.nz White's only strategic move was "jumping on my back" and claimed he deserved to win the show's $1 million prize because he played the better game.
But White, a 25-year-old pharmaceutical sales rep from Arkansas, said aligning with stronger players was a necessity to make it to the end.
"There were a lot of things to my game that I did right, starting off by assessing the cast right," she said.
"I built really strong personal relationships, and they were genuine. I will be friends with these people for the rest of my life."
Staying "humble" was also the key to winning, White said.
"In this game if you get overconfident it's a huge mistake, especially this season. Any time anyone was overly cocky and arrogant it seems like it didn't work out for them.
"I just tried to stay very humble just hoping I could take it home. I did the best I could at my final jury speech and the jury awarded me $1 million."
White said Hantz - an oil company owner and self-confessed millionaire - played the game for the title and not the money. Hantz tried to buy White's title of Sole Survivor from her during the reunion show for $10,000, but she refused.
There were "no hard feelings" towards Hantz over his outbursts about her win, White said.
"Russ is Russ - he's a character. We go back and forwards sometimes ... and I spit back at him sometimes. I think we'll always have a great friendship.
"Talking to him, I think the title was really important to him (and) he did play a heck of a game out there."
Her biggest disappointment came from a scene in which she prayed during an immunity challenge. White said she wasn't the only contestant showing her faith on the show - but she was the only one who ended up being shown on TV.
"They didn't show anything till that episode," she said. "We prayed all the time. We prayed during challenges, we prayed at night. Probably half the cast was praying.
"I just hope that I didn't turn anyone off. I don't shove my religion down anyone's throat. If they want to hear about it, I'll tell them."
White, who earned the nickname "Ratalie" after catching, killing, cooking and eating a rat on the show, said it had "tasted like chicken".
Her advice to future competitors was to gain weight, enjoy the experience and expect the worst.
"If you think it looks hard, it's about 150 times harder. The challenges are way harder than they look."
Her only plans for the money were to take her boyfriend on a vacation and save most of it.
"I definitely want to pay my taxes," she said.

I really didn't care who won as long as Russell LOST. He is the biggest asshole I have ever seen play the game and part of winning is not just the deceitfullness, which is all he was able to give! You have to have the admiration of the other players in order to win. If you can do both and make it til the end, then you deserve the reward. Russell was NOT able to do what he needed. He thinks he's so great and he needs to learn a little bit about being a dignified player instead of thinking he's the best thing to ever walk. I've got news for him. He makes me sick and he's not even close to being a decent man. If lying to everyone on the show is the way to win, then I wouldn't have ever watched the show. He seems to have forgotten that lies (and only lies) are not the way to win. He never learned how to tell the truth to any player. So sad, but that was his personality from the very beginning of the season. I always knew that he'd make too many enemies to win the game.
russell played the best game ever.. but his downfall was underestimating natalie. he may have outplayed everyone, but she outwitted him by convincing him SHE WAS NOT A THREAT, and that HE COULD BEAT HER. One of the best UNDER THE RADAR strategies i've seen since sandra won pearl islands by simply agreeing with everyone and giving her allegiance to whomever was in the power position, and agreeing to vote with them. personally i dont respect under the radar playing, and i think russell deserved it, but i can also see why the jury voted natalie. MICK? what a joke of a contestent.
Good on you Natalie. You kept your principles, honesty, integrity and loyalty to the very end. I am so glad you declined Russells offer-who does he think he is. He dose not know what integrity is if he is prepared to grovel to BUY the title. If he hasn't learnt by now I will tell him when a christian as you are ackowledges her Heavenly Father then they are a winner guaranteed. Kingdom Kids are winners through and through. Good on you and God Bless
What a bunch of sooks.....Russell should have won. Isn't it 'Outwit Outplay and Outlast'?The panel voted against Russell because he 'Outwitted' them to get their teammates to vote them off. He 'Outplayed' them by finding the idols and finally 'Outlasted' them. All Natalie did was align herself to the best player. Please contestants, take the emotion out of the vote. The wrong person definelty won. This sort of mistake turns viewers off.
I agree with Steph. Natalie did actually outplay the others. I did believe Russell would take it out; he was awesome. But... he underestimated Natalie. What I found totally unbelievable is was the inability of the players to remove Russell when they had the chance. I still can't believe they were all so blind. Good on you Natalie.
If you want to win the game, you have to get the jury votes. That's how it has always been. Russell lied his way to the final three, believing that would earn him respect. It didn't. Natalie also made it to the final three. Who cares if Russell did the dirty work for her? She was smart enough to realise that wouldn't go down well with the jury and that style of play wouldn't have suited her and she wouldn't have lasted if she'd tried it. Good work Natalie. She made it to the final and got a heap of votes and that's exactly what you need to be the sole survivor.
What a joke... clearly the jury was still sore after being knocked out my Russell and just gave Natalie the win because of it! Like seriously she didnt have a clue... her speech at tribal council didn't even make sense. Shame Russell deserved the win.
Russell, you are the best and deserve to win. I appreciate your killer instinct for survival. We might not be able to see a player like you in the series for a long long time. Its not fair that the bunch of looser took out this pride from you. They are the looser and could not judge your ability. They don't even know why they had agreed to play in the series.
Natalie I think you look a thousand times better without makeup. Your natural beauty as seen during surviver is better than the makeup and hair do worn in the studio.

At the end of the day, to win Survivor, you have to do two things. First: you have to get yourself into the final three (or two). Second, you must convince the jury that you derisive to win. While Russell did the first, he neglected the sound. Natalie did both. Therefore, she deserved to win. Also people seem to forget that it was Natalie who convinced Galu members to vote out Eric, which turned the game. Russell would not have made it to the end without Natalie.
