More claims about PM's man and doco funding Excuse me, I was just wondering ...

Wanaka man Stuart Landsborough has issued a $100,000 challenge to the producers and psychics of the TV show Sensing Murder.

Mr Landsborough, a longtime sceptic and founder of the $100,000 Psychic Challenge, wants the show's producers and each psychic to undergo a test devised by him to prove actual psychic ability.

He calls into question editing of the show and verbal and non-verbal cueing of the psychics on the show.

The test is based on the psychic finding two parts of a promissory note in 60 minutes.

Sensing Murder producer David Baldock declined to participate in the test, because the show was not about finding objects but revealing new information in unsolved murder cases, he said.

"It's set up like a finding a needle in a haystack approach."

While the show had not solved any of the 20 cases investigated, the psychics had revealed new information known only to the police and had provided leads for further investigation, he said.

I was once a sceptic now reformed with my own personal experience. I don't need to prove any thing, I know first hand, so unless you've been there how can you possibly judge?

Sceptics and optimists are not on opposite side of this thats just silly. I'm an optimist and a sceptic, thats a false dichotomy.

I'm glad to see plenty of healthy scepticism alive in NZ. With the rise of the destiny church I was starting to think we had slid back into the 10th century.

"I wonder if something terrible happened to one of your family members or friends and their bodies went missing or the case was never solved how..."

... you would feel if TV2 exploited it for entertainment purposes and made a load of money from it.

The word "or" still assumes that have to pick one option, which I might not want to do.

I didn't mention this earlier because I assumed it was too obvious, but then you have proved yourself to be an exceptional idiot.

The cold fact is we live and we die.If people get comfort from thinking theres more..good on them.Id love to see the 100,000 challenge go ahead just to end this rubbish.Winston Peters would make a great psychic... hes good at sidestepping the facts too.

i am really horrified to see the these good psychics being insulted in here and being offered that money to prove themselves. Another thing - these psychics do not accept any money just to prove themselves "for the fun of it".

Would it be a good idea for these people tell him (Stuart Landsborough) to his face; things that no one else or his family knows about him?

To be a psychic is a wonderful gift to the right person and it is not a gambling tool to make money with. If a psychic is a person to make money from being a psychic he or she will soon lose the gift. This gift is to help people and only those who had been helped would know or understand.

James Randi and the James Randi Education fund (JREF)offers a million US$ to anyone who could prove they had psychic or paranormal powers under test conditions. Thus far no one has been able to prove their powers and the high profile 'psychics' have refused to have their claims tested presumably because they know they cannot prove them.

While i would love to see the 'psychics' behind Sensing Murder tested. I would be extremely interested if their claims were true, sadly however the show appears to use little more than traditional mentalist cold reading techniques where the psychic makes numerous vague statements that are then edited down to create the appearance of having 'other knowledge'.

Agree with you Andrew. Didn't the article say that the psychics uncovered leads "known only to police". So really the police aint that much forrader in solving the cases. I have no doubt that some level of psychic ability exists, but not by those who feel the need to sell the product. Would you use the Bayeux tapestry to mop a floor, or an original Shakespeare to wrap up your fish & chips? To me, that's what "celebrity psychics" are doing with their ability (if it in fact exists within them).

The best thing the psychics on the show could do is teach Mr Landsborough what "psychic" actually means.

Worryingly, that statement just makes me think of "Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the Rebel's hidden fortress..."

And do not forget - as many others have said - the programme is not called "Solving Murder". It isn't about getting results, but providing insights.
