Famed comedy actor Jason Segel has revealed to Austrian website Kurier.at his plans to quit How I Met Your Mother after its eighth season wraps up.

Segel revealed that "It's great to do some 'Rated R' stuff again, because I've been playing the nice guy for quite a long time now. That's why I'm gonna quit How I Met Your Mother after the eighth season."

His departure could leave the show's future uncertain - he portrays one of the show's central characters, Marshall Eriksen, alongside Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders - but, according to E! Online, Segel's on-screen wife, Alyson Hannigan (Lily), is also keen to call it quits.

"Jason and Alyson are the two least likely to want to do a season nine. It would take a lot of money to keep them," reported E!.

Segel's plans to bow out of the sitcom could perhaps relate to his rapidly inflating Hollywood career, having fronted blockbusters such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up, The Muppets and The Five Year Engagement.
