He may have engineered the last two evictions from the 'fans' tribe but karma came calling for Joel Anderson as he became the latest player to be voted out of Survivor: Fans vs Favourites.
"I had a target on my back from day one - just by being the most vocal and the most aggressive," Anderson told Stuff.co.nz in an exclusive interview.
The 32-year-old said he felt vulnerable when in another twist the Survivor producers mixed up fans and favourites to form two new tribes.
"I was so uncomfortable with the new situation - I just tried to really hang out round the campfire; talked to them, tried to get to know them, tried to get them to know me.
"Ultimately looking back I probably gave away a little bit too much - they were taking it all in and were looking for my weaknesses."
The firefighter from Phoenix, Arizona said the new change of direction made him forget his game plan.
"My emotions got the best of me when we meshed and I stopped thinking logically."
"I wasn't running the numbers in my head - if I had I would have gone to Tracy and Chet and said I don't care if you're weak, I don't care if you're strong, the numbers tell me we need to align and let's keep it fans versus favourites, and no matter what happens we will never ever vote against each other."
Instead Anderson tried to convince his new tribe mates that Chet was the weakest link and should be voted out.
"Chet once again had been asking to go home, and it was the strategy that Ozzy and Eric and I had discussed and I thought that as a tribe we had agreed to grant him his wish, but there was obviously a lot more going on than I knew about."
Although the last three players in a row to have been voted out were fans, Anderson said he still thinks it is possible for a fan to win.
"The favourites have done it before and they know what to expect but the fans haves some strong people - physically and strategically. They have Eric who's a strong physical threat. He's pretty well-rounded in endurance and he's not a dumb guy, he's very book-smart."
And despite the way things turned out, Anderson said he's happy with the way things played out on the show.
"I would have been humiliated, if I was voted off because I was seen as a weak player, but if they voted me off because I was seen as strong and as a threat, then that's okay, because that's the name of the game."
*Survivor: Fans vs Favourites screens on TV3 on Thursday nights at 8.30pm. Stuff.co.nz will exclusively interview every contestant after their eviction.
