A whale has been spotted close to shore at Wellington's Breaker Bay this morning.

The huge mammal was first seen just after 8am, a local resident said.

''We think it's a southern right whale or a humpback but we're not sure. We need a whale expert here.''

The whale was ''rolling around in the seaweed'' just metres from Gibraltar Rock in the south of the bay, ''We see orca and dolphins, but to see a solitary large whale is pretty rare.''

The whale sighting was the talk of the bay, the resident said.

''We've got friends and family all arriving at the house.''
