The 24-hour average concentration yesterday was 68 micrograms of suspended particulate per cubic metre of air. The health guidelines call for the average over a 24-hour period to be less than 50mcg.

The high levels were recorded at the air-monitoring site in Anzac Square, while 45mcg was measured at the Washdyke monitoring site.

Levels in excess of 50mcg were also reported on Monday, last Friday and on May 3.

By this date last year, Environment Canterbury had recorded two days of high pollution in the Timaru airshed.

In previous years, one to 10 days of high pollution had been recorded by this date.
