Island Bay swimmers told to stay out of the water

Wellington's Island Bay Beach has been closed to swimmers after high bacterial counts were found in the water.

Water testing found levels of enterococci - an indicator of pollution including sewage - at such high levels it could cause a health hazard.

Wellington City Council has consulted with Regional Public Health staff and is urging people to stay clear of the water in the area until further notice.

Testing discovered the high levels early this week and daily sampling since has found the levels remain high.

The council's Infrastructure Planning Manager, Maria Archer, said the source of the contamination was not obvious but council engineers were ''urgently checking all mains in the area''.

Medical Officer of Health Annette Nesdale said the presence of enterococci in the water indicated it was unsuitable for swimming or recreation.

The bacteria in the water, if swallowed, could cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting. Cuts could become infected after contact with the water.
