A man has died after his car dropped 200 metres off a cliff on Te Mata Peak this morning.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the Hawke's Bay peak about 10.12am.

Inspector Tania Kura said the driver of the car died in the accident. Officers are bringing the body up by stretcher.

Senior Constable Chris Pye said the man was driving down the peak when the car came off the edge of a bend.

It plunged about 200 metres over walking tracks and coming to land in a gully.

Mr Pye was unsure when the accident happened.

He wanted to hear from anyone that saw a silver Mercedes at Te Mata Peak either last night or this morning.

The serious crash unit is examining the scene.
