INSEPARABLE: Most people asked in a recent survey said they could not live without their mobile phone.

Australians prefer to sacrifice exercise and quality time with their partner than live without their mobile phones or favourite bag, a survey has found.

The survey, conducted by arnold&bolingbroke (arnold&bolingbroke) on behalf of American Express, revealed 61 percent of the 1001 Australians polled can't live without their plastic credit and debit cards.

The survey examined their attachment to the personal possessions they carry every day and revealed many prefer to sacrifice key aspects of their lives like exercising, quality time with partners and watching a favourite television show.

Sixty percent of those surveyed said they can't live without their mobile phones, 32 percent said they couldn't live without their favourite bag and 24 percent said their laptop was their most treasured possession.

Other important items to Australians included digital cameras, portable music devices, car satellite navigation systems and Blackberry computers.

Some 52 percent of respondents said they would be willing to live without watching their favourite television show for a fortnight for the sake of their personal possessions.

And 48 percent said they would give up exercising, 34 percent would give up eating breakfast for a fortnight, 11 percent would sacrifice quality time with their partner and six percent would cease showering.

American Express head of insurance Fady Taouk said the survey showed items such as plastic credit and debit cards, mobile phones and gadgets were no longer considered luxuries.

"They are modern day essentials that provide convenience, peace of mind and security," he said in a statement on Thursday.

I do not have a landline so for me, my mobile is the only way I have of staying in contact wtih my parents and friends. I could possibly live without it but only if I increased my reliance on other forms of technology such as getting a landline which is more expensive than my monthly cell phone plan or using the internet more to stay in contact.

Great to see that everyone has their priorities right! I find it amazing that a survey was even done on this topic but then the results surprise me that so many people put so much emphasis on their mobile phones and other gadgets. I've recently been to Kenya as a volunteer and it was a wonderful experience - no electricity or running water for 3 months. While I wouldn't want to live like this forever it does put things in perspective and make you realise what things are important in life! The people I met in Kenya are happy and friendly even though they have 'nothing', but I would rather live like that than think that my mobile phone or favourite bag were the most important things in the world! Eeeeeek!

totally agree w ColB.

this is outrageous but it really does highlight the populations priorities. mobiles are given importance over eating breakfast, exercise and showering? our society has succumbed to technology? i have to get out of here, as soon as i am able, w all haste. seriously.

Smashed my phone by accident in February. Haven't replaced it and really don't miss it at all. If anyone wants to get hold of me, they have heaps of other options. Mobiles are over rated.

My passport - as it let's me escape to places where people are not so lame, technology is a load of bollocks.

What a daft survey.

nutritious food, warm clothing, safe shelter, good friends and family who we can trust - those are things we need. All the other things are wants.
