New Zealand men are among the most attractive in the world, but Kiwi women are among the world's ugliest.

That's according to a controversial website that allows only beautiful people to join.

Fewer than one in five New Zealand women (17 percent) have been accepted as members on beautifulpeople.com, but one in three (33 percent) Kiwi men successfully joined.

Members on the site rate how attractive a new applicant is over 48 hours.

They then decide whether he or she is good-looking enough to join.

More than 4900 New Zealanders have applied to join the site, with 1274 accepted.

Scandinavians have proved to be the world's most attractive.

Swedish men are regarded as the world's most attractive with 65 percent being accepted.

Norwegian women are the world's most attractive, with 76 percent allowed to join.

Overall, Kiwi males rank as the sixth-most-attractive worldwide.

Kiwi women aren't even in the top 10.

As usual, New Zealand men rate above our neighbours across the Tasman – only 20 percent of Australian males have been accepted on the site.

However, more Australian women (21 percent) than Kiwis have been accepted.

Mel Brown, director of local model agency Portfolio, said there was no shortage of good-looking folk in Christchurch.

"Here in Christchurch we really have some fantastic-looking guys and girls," Brown said.

However, Brown said it was often remarked abroad that the attractive Kiwis went overseas.

On the streets of Christchurch yesterday, Danish student Selma Boesen, 18, said European people were the world's most attractive.

"I think people in Europe are prettier. Fashion isn't a big deal here."

Friend Lis Andreasen, 18, said she didn't think Kiwi women were among the world's ugliest. "But I like the guys in Europe better," she said.

New Zealander Katie Kerr, 21, said claims Kiwis were among the world's ugliest women was a "ridiculous generalisation", while her friend, Jesse Goodwin, 21, said Kiwis were "pretty good looking".

Nat Shaw, 21, said there were plenty of attractive Kiwi women to choose from.

The beautifulpeople.com site went live worldwide last month. It has rejected nearly 1.8 million people from 90 countries.

I have lived in NZ(on & off) since the age of 6. I am from the Uk and have travelled the world. I was treated badly at school here by 'kiwi chicks' as they are the most jelous type i have ever met - and if you dress/look better than them you better watch out! I think thats why alot of kiwi females dont take pride in their appearance because they get given evil eyes all the time by the butch ones its very intimidating - However i now in my 30's refuse to look like them, i just dont have many kiwi female friends (i have european ones)!

Well well well well well!!!!! Why the division guys and gals??!!!!! We are all utterly and uniquely kiwi - there is no better or worse. We are an amazing nation of creative, talented and beautiful individuals recognised as such by the rest of the world!!! I myself am married to a gorgeous italian/german south african and have a more beautiful kiwi, italian english german south african daughter! I didn't choose him for his nationality or his good looks (altho to be honest they did play a part!) but for HIM, the person that is inside the shell. Stop being so shallow and get back to what it's all about. love peace and arohanui!!!

interesting that all my school mates who are overseas have found good looking guys...Heck I was propositioned by a few last time I was in London! I'm by no means beautiful to look at...personality counts for a lot

Kiwi women are beautiful!

Wow this seems disgusting and ignorant. Beauty is a fluid idea and changes with trends, time, cultures, and perspective. I think its ridiculous to have this website around. Please, go kiwi girls!!!

Hey proudkiwigirl, u have missed the point completely. These guys are talking about being rejected, when they feel they truely have something to offer!!if kiwi girls turn to chocolate, its not because there arent any good men around its because, they are to blind, uptight and narrow minded to see that there is a good man probably right in front of them but they cant see that because the guy doesnt meet her standards.Kiwi girls set the sights way too high. They want a guy who is sensitive, then its no we want a guy whos tought...You have no idea want you want!!they guy u are looking for doesnt exist anywhere but in the movies.nz guys are fed up with having to jump through hoops, we are people too, but u all see us as just a ends to a means!!

"If you dress in your wifebeater (excuse the political incorrectness) and stubbies". Cool can you still buy Stubbies? I'm particularly fond of buying a brown pair and they must have the small pocket on the front to put my beer money in.

So many haters!

How about this. You reap what you sew. If you dress in your wifebeater (excuse the political incorrectness) and stubbies, you should expect to pull these so called "Kiwi mingas". However, if you dress somewhat tidy and can hold a convo outside of powertools, maybe, just maybe, you will see the more attractive side of the population.

The guys here that are slagging of NZ women are those who have had little luck in the past, while the women are those who are looking for "Mr Right", like they see on Sex and the City or Desperate Housewives, and are surprised when they pull Fred Dagg.

Sure, foreign women are sexier. But I think it's the element of the unknown that makes them that way. Our women look just as attractive, but we've grown up with them. It takes one mysterious Spaniard or Eastern European with a distinct language barrier to convince us that the grass is greener. But in the long term, we should love what we know.

That goes for both genders.

How many of you mouth-breathing cretins are actually scoring the ludicrously attractive women you claim to be encountering on your round-the-world jaunts?

Pete   #315   04:35 pm Nov 24 2009

Reality check NZ women. Put your emotions aside for a moment, and open your mind to some new information. NZ men are becoming increasingly more interested in foreign women. Why is that? That is what you need to ask yourelves. If you are going to compete with foreign women, you need to know what your competing against. It's no use sweeping it under the rug, and resuming business as usual. What are your comparative advantages? What are the opportunity costs? Bottom line, if you want to marry a NZ man, then you need to understand you are competing against the worlds population of females.
