Cuba Mall snow video takes on 'life of its own'
A heart-warming video that captures the delighted faces of Wellingtonians during a rare snowfall in the city has caused a flurry around the world.
Irish man Ro Tierney's short-film shows people smiling and dancing as snow begins to fall on Cuba Mall in central Wellington during this week's winter storm.
With the tune of Claude Debussy's Clair de Lune playing in the background, his video gave a moving snapshot that has now been seen by thousands of people.
It has featured on websites worldwide, including The Washington Post, The Atlantic Magazine and Peru's El Comercio.
"It's unbelievable," Tierney said. "I still can't believe it. To think that I really didn't push it at all and within a couple of hours it seemed to have a life of its own.
"It seems to have connected with people in a way that I didn't think was possible," he said.
His video has attracted more than 250,000 hits on his website and more than 37,000 hits on YouTube.
"It wasn't my objective to have it seen by so many people, it was for me to build up a portfolio," he said.
Tierney, 31, who moved to Wellington with his Kiwi girlfriend over a year ago, quit his job as a salesman last week to become a full-time filmmaker.
"I thought it's time to pursue this full-time and I won't give it my full attention unless I leave my job," he said.
Tierney wanted to capture the snow somehow, so he planned ahead and went to Cuba Mall from his Victoria St home on Monday.
"I went around noon and got to Cuba St just in time to capture when it started snowing.
"I kept swinging the camera around frantically to try and get people's reactions because I knew I only had a few minutes to do it," he said.
It took him three hours to edit the video, and he sent it to local outlets that afternoon, including Stuff.
Tierney, has been sharpening his skills after buying a Canon 60D camera for New Year's and working as a freelance filmmaker. He has shot video for plays, local bands and businesses.
"My plan for the future is to make short films for businesses, cafes and restaurants that highlight the quality of businesses," he said.
Tierney, who has his own website (http://www.rotierney.com/), is also a singer and songwriter.
