A Palmerston North YouTube sensation has hit a career highlight as the second New Zealander to hit 1 million subscribers.

Shannon Harris' YouTube channel Shaaanxo went past the milestone yesterday.

The former Freyberg High School student was blown away to wake up to see her total subscribers had skyrocketed.

Harris, 21, found her success by using lipstick, foundation and a MacBook Pro, creating makeup tutorial clips.

"I could see it was coming but when it happened I was just speechless.

"It was like a part of me thought it was never going to happen.

"I found out first thing in the morning, as it happened overnight, and my heart skipped a beat.

"To know there are over 1 million people from around the world interested in what I do is just so amazing.

"I remember getting 100 subscribers and nearly crying."

When Harris first started uploading her videos she didn't realise you could earn a living off YouTube.

The only other YouTube channel from New Zealand that has surpassed the 1 million subscriber mark is Jamie's World, created by Jamie Curry from Hawke's Bay.

Curry may have more subscribers but Harris has more views.

Harris said there was no bad blood between the two.

"She has done super well for herself and I know her personally. She's a super cool chick and I'm happy for her."

Harris said the amount of subscribers didn't change the amount of money she earned.

"I suppose it's more the views. You get paid by ads. It depends on the company and value of the ad, to how much money you get out of it.

"I can't really comprehend the numbers ... I can't imagine that many people watching my face."

Harris began posting makeup tutorials as a hobby and it is now her fulltime job.

Through the popularity of YouTube she has been able to launch her own brand, xoBeauty, where she sells makeup brushes and fake eyelashes. She hopes to expand to include jewellery.

She said YouTube had given her many opportunities over the years but the greatest gift was that it had made her much more confident.

"I used to be very shy and found it so hard to make new friends. People come up to me in the streets and I no longer panic and hide."

As far as plans for the future go, Harris said she would carry on trucking along with her channel.

"I want to get more creative and put out some spectacular videos."

Harris grew up in Palmerston North but spent the past year living in Auckland.

Harris and her partner have moved back to her home town to buy a house.
