Top hair stylist Trevor Sorbie says one of the best ways to protect hair from holiday damage is to wash it in fresh water every time you go swimming.

The Scottish hairdresser - who has styled the locks of former Spice Girls singer Emma Bunton and Oscar-winning actress Dame Helen Mirren - warns hair can be ruined by sunnier climates, adding it is essential for people to protect it.

He said: "Wet your hair in fresh water before going into the sea or pool and then rinse off when coming out. This will help protect the hair from the damaging effects of chlorine and salt."

Trevor also stressed the importance of giving hair a conditioning treatment before you jet off on holiday, explaining it helps prepare locks for the change in conditions.

He said: "Ensure holiday hair starts off in peak condition, so it is less likely to get damaged in the sun. Try Trevor Sorbie Professional Deep Intensive Conditioning Treatment before you go."

Other tips to having great holiday hair include using a wide tooth comb to detangle beach hair, letting locks dry naturally rather than with a hairdryer, using a leave-in conditioner while sunbathing during the day and indulging in a salon nourishing session upon return.

Trevor became stylist for Vidal Sassoon in 1972 and by 1973 was the Artistic Director. He opened his first salon in 1979 before launching his own range of haircare products in 1986.
