Our New Zealand sun is getting increasingly vicious, and warnings of the damage it can do should not be taken lightly. You may be keeping out of the sun, but it doesn't mean you have to miss out on a great tan this summer. Bronwyn Williams reviews some of the products around, giving top tips for getting a beautiful bronzed glow - without the sunburn.

St Moriz Tanning Mousse, $19.99 from Kirkcaldie & Stains and all good pharmacies.

A great price point and a great product, this tanning mousse is easy to apply and gives a lovely rich brown tan that doesn't look orange. For a flawless application sweep it on with a tan applicator mitt - St Moriz does its own that retails for $16.99.

Quick Tip: Fake tanning is the obvious way to get some colour on your body without the aid of the sun, but there is certainly an art to getting the application right. Exfoliate your skin before tanning to avoid patches. Product also tends to grab on to areas of rough skin, so use a damp washcloth to wipe any excess tanning product from your knees and elbows.

Elizabeth Arden Colour Intrigue Bronzing Powder Duo $69.

An oldie but a goodie, this is a twin-pack bronzer with a dark and light colour option. We don't tan evenly all over our face, so this product allows you to add high spots and contours for a more natural look. A flat pigment, it won't leave you shimmering like a tween pop princess.

Quick Tip: A good bronzer should never make you look orange. Your bronzer should be the same colour as your natural tanned skin. If in doubt match it to your forearm, as this tends to get the most sun exposure.

M.A.C Mineralise Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle, $60.

Give your skin a glowing and dewy look without the oily sheen by using a highlighting powder. This gives a soft highlight without the nasty sparkle. Sweep over the areas where the light naturally hits your face - the top of the brow bone, top of the cheekbones and across the bridge of the nose.

Dr Hauschka Eye Shadow Pallet in Stone Colours, $85 from Farmers, Kirckaldie & Stains and all good health food stores.

Keep your makeup looking nice and natural for summer with nude and brown shades. Apply a sweep of the warm brown hue for a light day look, or use the deeper shades to contour a dramatic night-time eye. All Dr Hauschka products are 100 per cent natural so you'll be doing your skin a favour while you wear it, too.

The Body Shop Honey Bronze Dry Shimmering Oil, $45

No time to fake tan? For a golden glow in seconds, whip this over your legs before you dash out the door. With a soft shimmer it's also great for the shoulders and decolletage, just let it dry before allowing it anywhere near white garments.

Youngblood Lipstick in blushing nude, $42.60 from Beaute on Taranaki.

A nude lip is a great way to polish off a bronzed summer look. This product goes on with a gorgeous creamy application, and contains natural oils and vitamins to soften and hydrate the lips. All Youngblood makeup is mineral-based and free from chemical dyes.

Quick Tip: Enhance your pout by dabbing a spot of highlighting powder on to the centre of your bottom lip. The light will catch it and make it look full and plump.
