Ashley Graham: 'Boyfriends broke up with me because of my size'
Ashley Graham has had ex-boyfriends break up with her because they feared she would get "too fat".
The brunette beauty is arguably the most famous plus-size model in the business right now, breaking fashion boundaries with accomplishments such as becoming the first curvy woman to feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and Vogue.
Although she maintains a positive body image, 29-year-old Graham isn't immune to criticism – even from her former partners.
"Nothing's actually surprised me. I've lived exactly what they're living. I've lived the torment of the names. I've lived the torment of boyfriends breaking up with me because they were afraid I was going to be too fat later in life," the star, who is now married to film director Justin Ervin, told reporters at the Urban Arts Partnership 25th anniversary benefit.
"It's the same cycle, it doesn't matter what generation we are in. Every kid is going to go through the same thing."
Graham can have down days though, admitting there are times when she wakes up feeling like "the fattest woman alive". But the key is to boost her own confidence by complimenting herself in the mirror and praising certain parts of her body, from her hips to her belly.
She hopes her position in the industry will give young girls whose figures don't conform with the fashion norm a well needed ego boost, and she'll continue to be honest with her outlook.
"Having more role models, more women who are like 'Yeah, I have cellulite. Yeah, it's even on my arms, not just my legs. My butt is a really bizarre shape but you know what, whatever, I'm just going to go rock it,'" she said.
"I think if we had more role models like that that, that were really just speaking their truth about their body and the skin that they're in then maybe young America would be different."
