Makeup artist Bobbi Brown has just released her ninth book.

A household name in beauty for more than 20 years, makeup artist Bobbi Brown is the founder and ex-CCO of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. Purchased by Estee Lauder in 1995, Brown left the brand bearing her name in late 2016.

Her ninth book, Beauty From the Inside Out, $50, was released in New Zealand last month.

What was it like to leave the brand you had built up?
I went through so many emotions. I was sad, I was angry, I was unsure of the future. I was leaving my life and my baby after 27 years. However now, I am excited. I am looking forward to what's next and changing the game a bit!

And to leave your name behind in a sense too?
It hurt and it wasn't easy but I am still me and I'm ready to start this next chapter of my life.

You've been a huge global pioneer for beauty - what would you say were some of your signatures?
There's been a lot. As a pioneer of the natural look, I knew creating yellow-based foundations and peach or pink corrector would revolutionise the way women wore makeup. I also knew that blush should be the colour of your cheeks when they are naturally flushed like after you exercise, and lipstick should look like lips.

And what are you most proud of?
Besides my three sons? I'm proud of teaching women to be able to do their own makeup like a professional and helping them to be confident by realising that they are awesome just the way they are.

What is your current approach to beauty?
Pretty much the same as when I started the company. Simple and just the right amount to make you look natural and the best version of yourself.

And what are your current daily beauty/wellbeing routines/essentials?
Water and moisturiser! I know you've heard it before but I can't reiterate it enough, to look and feel your best you must hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Keep you face fresh with a great moisturiser. Moisturising doesn't only keep your skin from becoming dry, it gives your face a beautiful glow.

Additionally, I make sure to raise my heartbeat every single day, even if it's a brisk walk around the park and I take vitamins/supplements that ensure I'm getting all the nutrients I need and may not get enough of, even through a healthy and balanced diet.

What are some beauty tips/advice that have worked for you at every age?
A pretty, pink blush applied to the apples of your cheeks is the easiest way to give your face a lift, eyeliner is the best way to make your eyes stand out and look more defined (this is especially important as we age!), and finally, concealer under the eyes is the best way to make you look less tired and more refreshed.

What are five beauty products/tools every woman should own, and why?
Concealer to cover up dark circles, blush to give your face a natural flush, eyeliner to make your eyes stand out, mascara to open up your eyes and a great moisturiser that keeps skin hydrated.

You've always been an advocate for a fresh-faced 'makeup-less' makeup look, what are your thoughts on the following current beauty trends:
Contouring
- Don't do it.
Big, bold, exaggerated brows - I love a strong brow that is naturally filled in.
Tattooing - brows, eye liner, lip liner etc - Strongly advise against this it always looks fake.
Paintbox colours on eyes/lips - I love a bright lip on some people. Bright eye shadow looks best on the runway.

Do you think the beauty industry has changed a lot over the time you've been in it? If so, in what ways?
Absolutely. I'm not impressed with the trends we're seeing today, or the products themselves, I feel like we are regressing.

Based on that, what advice would you give emerging generations who are dreaming about getting into the industry or even having their own beauty brands?
I would tell them to work hard and be fearless and take risks to do what they love. Most importantly, I'd tell them not to follow trends but their gut. Don't do something just because everyone else is.

Any future plans you can share with us? Particularly related to the beauty industry…
Stay tuned… and watch my instagram… I have a lot of plans that will be revealed soon, starting with the launch of a lifestyle/content platform, justbobbi.com.
