Olympic heptathlete Sarah Cowley, who represented NZ in the London Olympics, shares her on- and off-track beauty secrets.
“I train six days a week, at the gym, at pilates, and outside on the track. With being outdoors all the time, sunscreen is really important to me. Running and sweating a lot, I’ve tried practically ever sunscreen, as I need something that’s light and will do the job without making me feel like my skin is in a sauna. I love the light feel of the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer; it has a high SPF without the oiliness.
Because I’m so active I have to have a few showers day, and I moisturise my body afterwards. I have Vaseline Intensive Care moisturisers at home, in my training bag and in my car. It’s the same with lip balms. Suvana has a papaw lip balm I love, it’s a rival to Lucas’ Papaw, but it doesn’t have alcohol in it, and because of that you can notice the smell difference.
I want to make sure my skin is taken care of, but I’m generally in a rush, so I stick to a simple cleanse, tone and moisturise routine with Dermalogica products, they’re really good. I’ve got quite dry skin, and it gets worse when I’m travelling. There’s this Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner that my friend recommended which is really good for making you feel refreshed and hydrated. I use it in the morning and before I go to bed, and if I’m flying, I just use it all the time.
I don’t like wearing a lot of stuff on my face. I’m generally busy, so it’s nice to just be like da-da done. If I’m going out I’ll wear a light bronzer – I’ve recently started using Natio mineral bronzer to even out my skin tone. I’ll also do a lip gloss and then a mascara and a liquid liner like M.A.C Fluid line – I wouldn’t say I’ve mastered it yet though!
When I’m competing, I straighten my hair to get it out of my face. It’s naturally really curly – I have Island hair! If I’m straightening, I’ll always protect my hair with a heat protect spray like Paul Mitchell Heat Seal. I don’t wear my hair out in public without taming it a bit with product; it’s just too much of a disaster! So, if I want to wear my hair out and curly I’ll always use a bit of Paul Mitchell Quick Slip Styling Cream to give it control.
I get my eyebrows done at this amazing new place I just found. It’s just on the outside of St Lukes mall in a hair salon called Mika. There’s a lady there that does incredible eyebrow threading for just $8. I also get a weekly massage, although, as it’s for training it’s not in any way relaxing!”
