Four easy ways to update your look
Although I'm the first to admit there are no rules when it comes to beauty, there are a few hair and makeup looks from 2012 (I'm looking at you dip-dyed ends and oval-shaped nails) that I'll be glad to see the back of.
If you're in the mood for a mini-makeover, here are five easy-to-execute trends that are set to make it big in 2013.
Proving hair accessories aren't just for pageant queens, hair pins, brooches, headbands and bobby pins, were everywhere at the spring/summer shows including Erin Fetherston and Louis Vuitton. Just remember: the key to pulling off any topper is to create contrast, so if you're wearing a pretty headband or jewelled number always pair it with a smoky eye or messy bun to create just the right amount of edge.
Although nail art is still going strong, manicurists are taking a less-is-more approach to paint jobs, opting for barely-there shades like pink, caramel and beige for a low-maintenance finish. If the idea of abandoning nail art seems a little overwhelming, opt for a nude polish that's a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone, or stick with a glittery gold or silver polish that you can layer for a subtle wash of shimmer. Our vote goes to the universally flattering OPI Nail Lacquer in Samoan Sand, $19.95.
THE GREAT GATSBY
All the hype surrounding the yet-to-be-released The Great Gatsby, has officially sent the beauty world into a frenzy. Think art deco-inspired compacts and liquid eye liner teamed with bob cuts and you get the pretty picture. While you're still waiting on the release date to be confirmed, we suggest you practice the berry-stained lip and messy-looking finger-waves seen at Jason Wu for a cool nod to Daisy Buchanan.
Moving on from 2012's obsession with all-things Tangerine Tango, this year a classic emerald green has been crowned by Pantone as the colour du jour. Softer than black and punchier than brown, you can't go wrong with a shimmery, wet-looking gel liner worn along the bottom lash line for a look that's fresh and young and perfect for pepping tired eyes. Try Rimmel London Glam'Eyes Eye Shadow Quad, $18.95, that you can apply wet or dry.
