Twenty-year old Shannon Harris is the definition of a YouTube sensation.
Over her two Youtube channels the vlogger of five years boasts some 467,000 subscribers, and since the beginning of this year her vlogging has provided her with a full-time income as a YouTube partner.
With just a Macbook Pro, a Canon 60d camera, a simple tripod and iMovie, "ShaaanXO" from Palmy North vlogs every second day on makeup, advice, fitness and, more recently, healthy food.
On a cold, wet winter day Stuff found Shannon in bright pink short shorts and (faux) tan in her warm apartment complete with small fluffy dog - there're far more brains than fluff about Shannon, though...
"I wear makeup when I am filming or on the weekend, like if I am going out shopping - otherwise I go makeup free. I'm very passionate about makeup and beauty care products... it started when I was younger and a little bit more insecure, but now it's just something that I love, it's not to hide anything.
I got a boob job in Thailand and vlogged the entire process on my second channel. I did a lot of research and I felt safe. Originally I was a A-B cup and I am a D now - they are not extreme, they fit with my body frame. I had gained and lost about 8kg about two years ago and when I did, I lost my boobs. They went to nothing and I wasn't used to it and I wanted them back to the way they used to be.
In the shower in the morning I cleanse my face and I always do an exfoliating scrub and put on some toner and moisturiser. I use a Michael Todd Tropical Fruit Scrub, and the other products are Michael Todd too. They contacted me ages ago and I have been using their stuff for a few months, it's nice because it's all organic, it feels really good on your skin, it doesn't dry you out or anything. I have normal skin.
On makeup days I prime with M.A.C Prep+ Prime or L'Oreal Lumi-Magique. I get dark under my eyes so I conceal with Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer - I really like that one at the moment. At the moment Nars Sheer Glow and Urban Decay Naked Skin, which I buy online, are my two favourite foundations. I change out my foundation routines most days because I have so many different ones to try. But these two stand out: the Nars is really skin-like, and the Urban Decay is really glowy so you look flawless without looking too caked-up.
My blush is 'Tarte' long lasting (so hard to get it New Zealand, but it lasts a really long time) - it has natural ingredients so it doesn't break you out. Obviously I use some brands that have a lot of chemicals, but if I can, I try to go more natural. But some mineral makeup brands I don't like so much because they don't perform as well... that's why I keep my skincare really good, to get it all off my face and nourish my skin.
My Holy Grail hilighter is the Stila Shimmer Duo in 'Kitten' that I bought from Mecca Cosmetica - it's probably my favourite makeup product in the world.
I've used the 'elf' eyebrow kit for years, and I can't get away from it, and I use 'elf' liquid eyeliner too. It's very, very cheap stuff. I don't like spending heaps of money on stuff like that.
I use different eyeshadow every day, but if I went travelling my staple would be the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette - it's got all the neutrals you need, and darker for nighttime as well. My mascara is 'Tart' "lights, camera, lashes" - you have to get it off eBay because no one ships it to New Zealand.
I use my own makeup brush line, XO Beauty - they are made to suit my taste! But I use others too because I don't want to be a product pusher.
I wear false eyelashes most of the time when I wear makeup (these are Ardell Wispies) I just love the way they look. Sometimes I get extensions - if you aren't wearing makeup they are natural and pretty - it's just a little confidence boost.
I don't use lipliner, I go straight for lipstick usually. I love M.A.C lipstick heaps (it's probably my favourite lipstick) - they have a great range of colours. This (pale pink) one is in ''Playing Koi.' I like Nyx lipsticks as well - they are really, really nice if I want something cheaper. If I use lip gloss I will just go for something pale pink like Australis Colour Inject Gloss. Pink and orange are my signature.
I use Crest White Strips that I buy on Ebay - they are miracle workers - but you have to be careful if you have naturally sensitive teeth.
My bronzer is Nars Laguna - it's my Holy Grail bronzer. I use it every single day to warm up the outsides of my face. I use Lioele 'Bare My Skin' powder - it's an Asian brand. It still shows your natural texture underneath so if you put on a dewy foundation, it doesn't make it matte. I use their Fresh Dewy Makeup Fixer as well, after I have finished all my makeup. It leaves a dewy finish to my skin and it makes my makeup last twice as long - I find all these brands online.
I use Joico shampoo, conditioner and hydrating treatment in the shower on my hair, and MoroccanOil through the mid-lengths and ends. (Anything that's left in my hands I put on my body, it's really good for your body). I do use heat-protectant spray, but there are so many different ones, there's not really any particular one that I like.
I wash my hair as little as I can - if I can get away with once a week, I will do that. I wait for it to air dry, use the blowdryer to finish it and then I straighten it with ghds. I find that if I straighten it the day I wash it, it will hold the shape a lot better and it's a lot smoother.
My natural colour is 'dark mousy blonde' and I get my hair coloured light blonde at Vivid Hair Design in Kumeu - they are not local* but I go there because they are that good.
I use Lush soap, L'Occitane mango flower body cream and their honey hand cream - it's amazing. I get my nails done with Orly gel nail polish - otherwise I just chuck on pale pink nail polish, literally $2 Shop nail polish... I'm not big on nails.
My favourite perfume is Miaow by Katy Perry - it's kind of embarrassing, but I just love the way it smells.
It's a goal to go more natural with what I use, but lots of my viewers are only 12 or 13 and they can only afford the mass market brands like Revlon and Maybelline.
I want to find cruelty-free, affordable brands... I really want to get myself out there and inspire younger people."
