Aucklander Sara Allsop has been named New Zealand's Hairdresser Of The Year 2013.
Allsop, who co-owns Dharma salon in Mt Eden with her husband, Jock Robson, received the award at the HairExpo Awards in Sydney, Australia, last night. Robson was also a finalist in the award, along with fellow Auckland stylist Jason Chong Li and Adrian Barclay from Invercargill.
Each finalist had to submit photographs for the competition, as well as their CV and a portfolio of their year's work. A panel of 15 judges including respected New Zealand hairdressers Mana Dave (last year's New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year) and Iain Smith, judged the submissions.
The award is described as "the ultimate accolade for New Zealand hairdressers, recognising excellence in creativity and salon leadership, team work, business acumen, client management, industry development... and peer recognition."
Allsop, who last won the award in 2011, said she was "obviously" happy to win.
"It gives you more opportunities as people tend to appreciate your work and have confidence in you to do more. For me it's not only about developing my own career. It will help me get extra support from the companies I work with like ghd and Redken to put more back into the industry."
Frank Apostolopoulos, creative director for Melbourne's Biba salon group, was named Australian Hairdresser of the Year 2103.
