Give your toes a winter treat with the hottest pedicure shades...

Beauty's got the blues. Bold blue (think: cobalt and electric) is the season's 'it' colour, and a perfect update to last season's slightly more conservative navy. A high-shine option such as OPI's Keeping Suzi at Bay, $24.90, looks beautiful on the toes. Also try YSL's La Laque Couture in Blue Cosmique, $47, and Leighton Denny's Inkjet, $30.

Orange is so hot, you could be forgiven for thinking the colour had been personally (sun)kissed by the beauty gods. One of the reasons is that the shade not only adds a fresh, citrusy zing to the nails, but it's also almost universally flattering.

Medium and dark skins can cope with intense colours like OPI's On the Same Paige, $24.90, or Orly's Orange Punch, $24.99. Paler skins look great in softer shades such as Leighton Denny's Meet Me in Monaco, $30.

A perfect canvas is called for if you love metallics. Ensure your nails are imperfection-free by laying on a basecoat; shimmery polishes will only accentuate any ridges or ragged edges. Go for glamour with OPI's Haven't the Foggiest, $24.90, or Orly's Shine On Crazy Diamond, $24.99.

Pastels so revved-up they are almost edgy are making their presence felt. From sunny yellow to baby blue and minty green, these babies are creamy/playful rather than pale/wan. Sweet but not insipid. Try OPI's Chic from Ears to Tail, $24.90, or Orly's Melodious Utopia, $24.99 (on counter early August).

The best way to pick a nail neutral, say the experts, is to choose a colour one shade off from your skin tone - lighter or darker. But the contrast should be subtle. That way you get the luxe look without making your toes look flat and grey. We love OPI's It's All San Andreas's Fault, $24.90, and Orly's Country Club Khaki, $24.99.

Pink - from punchy to peony - is a perennial pedicure favourite. Fuchsia is gorgeous; so too are neon corals and sorbet-like raspberry shades. Like orange, there's a pink to suit every skin tone. We love Lancome's Le Vernis in Love in Rose Pitimini, $28 (a classic toenail shade if ever there were one), Leighton Denny's Pink Promenade, $30, and OPI's A Definite Moust-Have, $24.99.
