What anti-ageing products really do
Makeup & Skincare
Do you struggle to understand the scientific jargon on the back of expensive anti-ageing skincare? Here's a layman's explanation for what five popular products really do.
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex, $180
THEY SAY: "Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex provides optimised night time assistance to skin's appearance using ChronoluxTM technology to support the natural synchronisation of skin's repair processes and increase the skin's ability to repair its own appearance. A new patented technology encapsulating alkyl guanine transferase (AGT) helps repair the appearance of unhealthy skin. This serum helps repair the look of damage from all known major environmental assaults including spoke, pollution, toxins and chemicals. It contains high levels of hyaluronic acid to moisturise the skin and antioxidants to combat free radicals and work together to create the ideal environment for skin's natural repair and protection."
WE SAY: This is Estee Lauder's best-selling product worldwide and there's a reason for it. While no product will miraculously make you look 10 years younger, this will improve your skin's texture and tone over time (it'll take six weeks or so to notice results). Expect to notice subtle changes to your skin, although this product does most of its good work from the inside out so it's more about the long-term anti-ageing benefits. It's a serum that will work like a multi-vitamin for your skin. It's slightly oily in texture and smells of honey.
Osmosis Stem Factor Liposomal Growth Factor Serum, $185
THEY SAY: "Osmosis Stem Factor Liposomal Growth Factor Serum enhances the repair of damaged cells and encourages the formation of new cells to make collagen and elastin. It utilises over 150+ different skin growth factors derived from pristine, adult stem cells, to combat the signs of ageing, hyper pigmentation and skin damage. These growth factors have a patent-pending liposomal delivery system that increases their penetration into the skin by 600 per cent."
WE SAY: It sounds freaky, but this product contains growth factors derived from donated human stem cells. The concept behind it is that like attracts like, and human growth factors are better absorbed into our skin than any other type. This serum gives your skin a buffet of growth factors and nutrients, so it's able to take what it needs in order to repopulate the cell count, provide more collagen and elastin, and make your skin behave as if it's young again.
Olay Regenerist 14 Day Skin Intervention, $39.99
THEY SAY: "Olay Regenerist 14 Day Skin Intervention works overnight to hydrate, firm and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The specialist night-time treatment contains amino-peptide +B3 for a youthful lifted look. Nights 1-7 promises to accelerate exfoliation of the skin surface while nights 8-14 helps to fill wrinkles with polishing micro-powders and hydrating moisture."
WE SAY: This treatment is designed to replenish the skin while you snooze. There are two different phases to the process and seven days of each product. While it won't reduce fine lines or change you dramatically, this product will improve your skin's texture.
Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, $168
THEY SAY: "Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector is a new treatment serum that effectively helps fade the appearance of dark spots, age spots and discolourations due to ageing, years of accumulated sun damage, environmental assaults and past acne scarring. Ideal for skins that cannot tolerate other skin brightening treatments, this product is gentle and non-irritating. Clinique's patent-pending CL-302 complex features a new plant-derived technology that is scientifically proven to significantly improve evenness of skin tone, radiance and clarity..."
WE SAY: This product is fantastic if you've got acne scars, dullness or pigmentation. Expect to notice skin brightening pretty soon after first use, subtle fading after four weeks of use, and more fading further down the track. It's essentially a gentle resurfacing product, and contains salicylic acid which works to break down the top levels of the skin and allow the other ingredients in the product to penetrate better. Because of the salicylic acid, it's probably not suited to sensitive skin.
La Mer The Regenerating Serum, $565
THEY SAY: "With a high concentration of Miracle Broth and regenerating ferment derived from marine plant stem cells, The Regenerating Serum fights inflammatory stressors that lead to the destruction of collagen, which in turn provokes skin to age prematurely. The regenerating ferment contains potent marine plant stem cells that assist in the skins renewal helping support its natural structure, restore skin integrity and protect it from external aggressors. The marine peptide ferment with anti-age marine algae and peptide complex helps to firm the look of skin and boost its natural collagen production, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Colloidal gold delivers smooth, firming and anti-irritant benefits while a lime tea peel extraction provides skin with just the right amount of anti-oxidants."
WE SAY: While many anti-ageing products use acids and aggressive ingredients to work at the skin, this product is very gentle - it's actually soothing. Contains La Mer's famous Miracle Broth - a concoction of marine plants that are fermented for their healing properties, and an extraction from plant stem cells to regenerate cell turnover. Expect firmer feeling skin almost immediately, and enhanced radiance. Fine for all skin types as it's so gentle.
