IMMOVEABLE: L'Oreal Infallible 2-Step Lipstick, RRP $29.99.

No matter how long-wearing it promises to be, most lipstick seems to disappear faster than you can keep applying it.

It's somewhat depressing to find the smile you painted on at breakfast time has migrated to the rim of your tea cup - or worse, your teeth - before 9am - but I've never been a fan of those super long-wearing formulas. In fact, the last time I had a thing for long-wearing lipstick was in the 90s. My friend Kelly came back from a holiday in the US with some tubes of Revlon Colorstay in nude and a brown lipliner so we could recreate Pamela Anderson's two-tone lip colour. The unrelentingly matte colour went on smoothly enough, but I can still remember how it cracked unattractively, leaving us left with lipliner traces and sore lips.

Fast-forward nearly 20 years and things have come a long way, but I was dubious about L'Oreal's new Infallible 2-Step Lipstick in spite of its claims to be the "new standard in longwear lip colour".

The double-ended product has a liquid colour at one end and a balm at the other. You apply the colour first, keeping your lips relaxed so it doesn't crack, then swipe the balm over the top. The colour feels slightly sticky for about 30 seconds, then dries to a soft, shiny finish.

Amazingly, it really does last all day - and if you don't attack your lips with some heavy-duty cleanser and a hot flannel before bed, it will last all night too. One day last week I kept it on through multiple cups of tea, a series of air-kisses, a bowl of soup, a 13km run in the rain and a shower, only to realise it was still hanging in there. I found it a bit alarming to wake up the next morning and see traces of it clinging to my lips. It made me realise why spokesmodel Claudia Schiffer claims "I don't just wear it... I live in it" - it's because she can't get the damn stuff off.

Of course, there are downsides. Application requires both a steady hand and a degree of commitment. There's no backing out once you've got this lipstick on, not unless you've got a good 10 minutes and some heavy-duty makeup remover to hand. But I think that's a small price to pay for being able to draw on a grin that won't wear off.

L'Oreal Infallible 2-Step Lipstick, RRP $29.99, available in 14 shades from Farmers and selected pharmacies.
