Flimsy lacy things - or not
Though I have no independent verification of this, I imagine other women's lingerie drawers to contain lots of flimsy lacy things.
Somehow, it's never been something I’ve been moved to ask during conversations with my friends.
My undies drawer contains a number of feats of mechanical engineering.
On the weekend, prior to washing a week's worth of dirty clothing, I realised my sports bras outnumber my normal ones.
In what clearly speaks volumes about my lifestyle and priorities, I think I own double the number of sports bras than I do ordinary bras. More than $300 worth of the suckers.
Now as far as I can see, a sports bra shouldn’t cost $60. I guess it’s fair enough that they’re more expensive than ordinary ones – they contain more underwire, hooks and volume of fabric, but even so, I doubt it adds up to $60.
Then, if you add the $40 crop top I also wear under my t-shirt, I’ve got a $100 worth of supportive gear going on. And it’s all fairly ugly.
At least they don’t result in the dreaded 'monoboob' look - I once owned a sports bra that did this. It was functional, and it lasted forever, but that’s about the only favourable comments I can make about it.
The price seems unfair to those of us that are generously endowed, don’t you think? And something every woman has an opinion on, if conversations and previous blogs are anything to go by.
I know I shouldn't begrudge the expense, but I do, even though I know they do an important job.
To do a compare and contrast, but dint of judicious shopping, the outfit I’m wearing to work today was purchased new for about $150, including everything but accessories.
The running gear I’ll be wearing at some point tonight clocks in at about $500.
Despite deep suspicions about their labour practises, I own a lot of Nike and Adidas. For good measure there’s TYR, Orca and Mizuno thrown in too.
I realise I'm paying for the brand, but I'm prepared to as I know the garments are not going to part company at the seams within two seconds.
Mind you, I bought my favourite cycling shirt in a second hand clothing shop. I think it comes from the triathlon world champs circa 1985, judging by the colour scheme employed. Totally rad man.

I bought a Nike training shirt that came apart after 3 workout sessions whereas my old Warehouse Active Intent dri-fit is still going after 4 years of abuse. Go figure.
Actually I don't mind paying a reasonable amount for GOOD gear (including bras) - there is quite a lot of research and technology and effort that goes into making (some) good sports stuff. I'd rather pay for that than clothing "designers" who just copy everyone else and charge through the roof for it.
p.s. my normal bras cost about $80 so I don't think $60 is too bad for a sports bra ;)
After hating my flat chest for years, I am now grateful for it- it makes triathlon and sports in general so much easier. My "sports bras" are Active Intent's firm crop tops and cost $9.99, and the built in bra in the tri top is more than enough for me.
Sorry to gloat- but there's aren't many upsides to AAs!
$60 isn't really that pricey when it comes to bras, whether they be sports ones or not. Try the bendon outlet for cheaper underwear -i've seen sports bras there, and they sometime have sales like nothing over $30!
Yeah I have to go with Kate on this one. I thought losing 2 cup sizes whilst losing weight (deliberately) was a downside until I went to buy a sports bra and discovered I can use an active intent sports bra for $15. I'm also sorry to gloat but it made the whole going from a C to barely an A a little easier to handle.
What brand of sports bra do you use? I am rather well endowed also and still haven't found one that is awesome...
I bought two sports bras at a bendon factory shop for $10 each - they retailed for $60 each. The best bargain ever!
I was more than pleased to drop 2-3 cup sizes when I lost weight! I guess I strike a healthy balance. I have three good sports bras (around the $60 mark each), but I also have a good selection of frilly things. I hate paying full price for lingerie so the Bendon outlet store is my friend, and most of the frilly things come from the Kirks sales. I love going into one of those sales, digging around the tables, coming away with about twenty different bras of assorted sizes, and then trying them rapid-fire style. I usually come away with at least four pairs that are workable, and then I have the added challenge of trying to find a matching pair of underwear in the heap!
The $50 Shoe Clinic voucher gained after I treated myself to some (pink) MiAdidas trainers went towards a cute set of 2XU trishorts and matching singlet top - pink and grey! Such a pity that stuff is so expensive. Plus I recently realised I've lost my Taupo Cycling Challenge shirt, so I guess I'll have to do that event again to get another ...
They don't make sports bras my size.. in fact they barely make normal ones.. I must have at least a thousand dollars worth of underwear easily, but thats what happens when you fork out $100 a bra. Most of it isn't exactly lacy though much more um utilitarian. Of course I suppose it doesn't matter as running is rather um hazardous, will just stick to squeezing into some togs and taking to the pool.

One day after realising that I needed 3 drawers for underwear I started counting. I had 108 g-strings alone! I then realised I might have a problem. (Whilst some women buy shoes, mine is underwear. I just can't help myself).
So I cleared out. The ones that still had the original tags on them went to the Sallies and another half went in the bin. I hate to think how much was spent.
Buying bras still sucks. I hate spending $60 on them!!
