Yay, Christmas holidays

Last updated 08:00 23/12/2009

The last days before I officially go on holiday are always difficult.calendar

No matter how busy I am - and my job usually is - I generally find the last hours of the last day before a break crawl by.

Especially when half of New Zealand appears to be already on holiday. Only two of us turned up to swim squad this morning. Still, at least it gives me something to congratulate myself about.

Meanwhile, I've scared myself by cleaning my desk and discovering how dirty it really was. I hope all the old paperwork I chucked merrily at the recycling bin didn't include anything important.

So, I am now at the point where I accept things not already finished are not going to get done this year. Except perhaps to write this blog.

Despite coming across somewhat like a Grinch in earlier blog entries, I would like to sincerely wish you all a very merry Christmas. I'm taking a wee break from blogging until the start of the New Year.

I hope all of you who get time off have a great break. I'm working the night shift New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, so I feel your pain if you’re working over the silly season at all.

I also hope Christmas involves far too much food, great fitness gadget gifts from Santa and a bit of peace and quiet.

When it comes to my family, only the first of the items on that list is guaranteed. Still, one out of three is better than nothing.

Besides, I'm taking my running shoes and togs on holiday with me, so I can escape into the serenity of a haze of sweat. Splendid.

Anyway, thank you all for reading and commenting this year. It wouldn't be the same without you. And I hope to see you back here, same bat time, same bat channel, in 2010.

If I hear on the news about a journalist wiping out her family using an overcooked turkey as a blunt instrument I shall know the identity of said journalist even with name suppression.

Do try and enjoy yourself and count to 10 before giving way to a homicidal rage. Aunty AJ sounds too nice to be beaten to death with a parson's nose,

May I also suggest that instead of a lie in you get up early on Christmas Day and go to church (any church) and perhaps discover there is more to this than food, punch ups and sleep. Have a very happy Christmas, and at the risk of making you squirm, may you also be blessed at Christmas.

I hope your Christmas is as good as you can hope for Ann.

Thanks for the blog posts. It's been interesting to read throughout the year. Have fun over the holidays. What's the worse that can happen with your family? You become super speedy and lightening fast?? It doesn't sound so bad to me :-D

Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Thanks for sharing your stories with us this year Ann. I'm sure there are lots of aspiring iron-persons (like me) who enjoy hearing about, identify with and take inspiration from your experiences. I look forward to more in the new year and concur with Ben in wishing you a blessed Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone, I love reading this blog, you all inspire me. I've managed to run every day since the school holidays started which is a miracle for me as a single mother with 2 children. I'm hoping I'll end the holidays fitter than I started them. And it means I can eat my Christmas dinner with no guilt! Enjoy your time with your family's.

Merry Christmas Ann and all the commenters. I have really enjoyed reading this blog and have found it a great source of inspiration as I have transformed myself from an unfit, lethargic and sometimes grumpy mum to an fit, energetic and, most of all, happy runner! There I said it. I am a runner! Can't wait to see what 2010 has in store. All the best!

Merry Christmas Ann,

I can't believe you only had two at swim squad! We had 20 and spent the session doing all sorts of fun stuff, like sprinting 25m, getting out the pool, running to the fence and back, jumping back in, running to the flags before sprinting to the 25m line. Also reverse freestyle, fin top and tail races (you hold onto a buddy's feet, they use their arms while you kick, "running" relays and blind underwater swimming.

Lots of fun, capped off with breakfast at Zippy's.

The one thing I hate about Christmas is swim squad takes a break.

Looking forward to hearing about your family festivities and happy training. My A race is done and dusted (Athena prize winner at the Rotorua Half Ironman last weekend) so I'm going mountain biking tomorrow.

Merry Christmas Ann and everyone else! I haven't had much of a chance to read and comment the last few months. But when I do, I always feel inspired by you all. Have a great break and will 'read' you all in the New Year. Here's to 2010 :-)
