When a pet chooses you
BY NICK BARNETTSometimes, when you're trying to choose a pet, what actually happens is that the pet chooses you. Know what I mean?
It happened to me with the cat-love of my life, Pierre.
I was a young, single, red-blooded man with a good income and a nice house. It's a truth universally acknowledged that such a guy is in need of a cat, so I went to the SPCA in Wellington to find one.
The cat enclosure was a breezy wire-netted place the size of a living room. Cats slept on ledges or baskets, or mooned around seeking attention from any human visitor.
The SPCA staffer just allowed me to look around and spot a cat I liked. I saw quite a few - contrary to my previous mental image of SPCA cats, these were mostly healthy, lustrous-looking animals in possession of all their limbs.
I settled on a ginger-and-white beauty - probably the best-looking cat in the place. "He looks perfect," I said.
But then I spotted a still grey cat hunched into himself on a shelf, up against a window. As I looked at him, his slightly crossed-looking green eyes met mine and he gave his eyelids a sad squeeze.
"I'd like to take him too."
Two cats? That hadn't been the plan. Woo, big responsibility! But the SPCA lady said I was welcome to take both cats home, see how they went, and if things didn't work out, I could bring one back.
So the two cats came home in separate cardboard pet-taxis. I opened them both and the ginger-and-white leapt handsomely out and went straight for the kitchen, sniffing around. The grey - he was actually a Russian blue - took his time stepping out, and stayed near the box.
I put two bowls of tinned catfood on the floor, and retreated to a couch to watch proceedings, thinking it would be a good test of how well the cats would get on.
Ginger-and-white pounced on the food and inhaled it.
What did the Russian blue do? He completely ignored the food, looked around, then made his way to the couch, climbed up, and pushed his furry frightened self up against my side.
Well, as they say, he had me at hello. The ginger and white cat ate both bowls of food and went searching for more, oblivious to me and the other cat. I'd found the cat I wanted, and learned a lesson about choosing a pet purely on looks.
So next day I took the other cat back to the SPCA, leaving my adoption fee as a donation, and came home to the Russian blue. Who I named Pierre, and kept as my pet for 16 years.
He had chosen me, I felt, fixing me with that hopeful, sad look and then forsaking the food in favour of my company.
Maybe the connection I felt was just my imagination, and Pierre was simply desperate for attention. But his behaviour that day showed me something about his character that turned out to be true, which was he was a big, beautiful, slightly wall-eyed but entirely loyal cat.
Has this kind of thing ever happened to you? That "click" you feel with a pet who turns out to be a perfect companion?

About 7 months ago I purchased a small dog (now named Daisy). I was at the pet store browsing and one of the staff was taking puppies out of their enclosures so people could hold them. As soon as Daisy and I made eye contact she desperately struggled in the arms of the store worker trying to reach me. The moment I had her in my grasp she immediately relaxed. I never put her down again. This little dog chose me...I had no say in the matter at all.
Similar thing happened to me. I was volunteering at the SPCA in Wellington a few years ago. A few months into it, I went in one day, and there was a tortoiseshell which wouldn't leave me alone, kept purring and rubbing up against me, and would let me pick her up. A black and white cat was doing the same thing. I didn't know how to choose which one I wanted... and the manager of the cattery said they had been brought in together so must be adopted out together. I took them home and they have been my little darlings for about three years now. They never scratch, never bite, and always seem to know how you're feeling. Pets are so much better when they choose you as opposed to you choosing them :> It's not your imagination at all, it's a definite connection.
All my pets have picked me, our current dog Busta (yes I know how original) when we had a look at him at the pet shop my Mum told me we were just looking. As soon as he saw us he went nutty! He cried and his tail was going as fast as it could. We just couldn't walk away from him and I don't think he would have let us if given the chance. An old cat that me and an ex got together choose us too. We got her from the SPCA as a kitten, we walked in and had a look around and all the kittens were having too much fun to take a second glance at us, then this cute little black and white kitten walked slowly up to the door where we were and let out a tiny Meow, I looked at her, her tail had a HUGE kink in it! Instantly fell in love with her, as soon as she was home, she was on my lap then made her way up and curled up on my Shouler. I miss my baby girl.
I have quite a few pets, but my first dog chose me.
The first being my bichon. I went to buy a dachshund but the pet shop lady decided she wanted it for herself and couldnt part with it.
At the back of the store, a tiny runt of a bichon looked up at us and we picked her up for a cuddle. She licked my neck then snuggled into me - then did the same to my husband. Saying "take me home."
We had to have her then - we have had to fight for a lick or snuggle ever since, but she's our baby and we love her - even if she did trick us!
My little Bella was a bit older than I was looking for, but as soon as I saw her gorgeous face, and picked her up and she snuggled into me I knew she was mine. I named her that second, and she still suits her name, meaning beautiful.
I have to say its the same with horses, there are some I have made a connection with the moment I saw them and have never felt safer on them, despite how crazy they are
When I got my kitty from the SPCA about 2 1/2 years ago i passed him while looking through the cat cages and he was just meowing the whole time, I remember thinking, what a noisy kitten. Then I went to buy a little grey tabby but as I got to the counter he had just been sold. I had another look around and went into the back of the cages and the noisy little kitten ran upto me and climbed his way up my legs and ended up sitting on my shoulder. That's when I knew I had to buy him. He's so friendly, not scared of strangers and never bites or scratches.
My cat picked me. We went to the Cats Protection league to look for a kitten and I was looking at the cats they had there. This little black kitten climbed up me and onto my shoulder so I took him home and named him George. I've him since then and he his my boy
My last cat was from the SPCA. I went looking for a kitten and saw this imperious tiny cat looking at me as if to say "We are NOT amused. Please remove me!" Not only did she choose me, she chose her name, Queenie. She also chose my husband. A feline with cat-titude. She was with me for 16 years and I still miss her dreadfully.
The same thing happened to me. I went to the SPCA approx 5 yrs ago and was looking for a "buddy" for my cat at home. We walked around and if anyone knows what the cat adoption section looks like at Mangere SPCA, you'd know what I mean. The cages can be accessed from both sides (ie:there's one section for sleeping in & one for playing in), anyway my mum saw this big fluffy silver cat following us & watching our everymove, purring. So yeah we had to stop at her cage & that was it - she became part of our family. The two cats get on and live a very spoilt life with me. The funny thing was, there was a lady there with her kids who wanted the same cat & each time she approached, my little princess hid from her and hissed & wouldnt let her near her. She even tried to scratch the lady & her kids, but the stupid woman still kept trying to touch her. She even followed us outside with our precious bundle wanting us to give her the cat. Weird. So yeah I fully believe that pets choose us. I was destined to go there that day & adopt Princess - we were meant to be together.

I've had plenty of cat connections over the years, but my little Aubrey is truly my one and only cat soulmate. We certainly picked each other :)
