Cat vs bear

After a week of mostly doggie blog posts, how about this for cat lovers? A video of a house cat chasing off a bear, surely proving that cats rule.

Cat vs BearThe bear turned up outside a house in Quebec, Canada, sniffing out a fragrant rubbish bag.

The residents sheltered inside, keeping well clear but filming the bear's visit.

Then...whoosh. What's that streaking across the porch?

Switch windows and we see the bear confronted by a very angry cat, in full arching-and-hissing mode.

What the cat lacks in size, compared with the bear, it makes up for with chutzpah.

After a few seconds, the bear slopes off, carrying a rubbish bag.

In case that video format doesn't work for you, here's a YouTube version of the video, with music overlaying the original sound.

That is one stout-hearted cat. Or maybe a cat with serious anger-management problems.

I can't imagine my cat doing anything like this. But I'm sure my dog Connor would be out there defending his home and ready to risk his life to chase off the bear.

One thing that puzzles me is the giggling from inside the house - sure, it is kind of funny to see the cat throw a wobbly at the bear, but only when you know that the bear isn't just going to pick up the cat and make a snack of it. If I actually saw a cat or dog confront a bear in that way, in real time, I'd be sick with dread.

Well, maybe these people knew their cat very well. Maybe they knew this is a cat that never fails to get its way.

Have you ever seen a pet punch above its weight?

One hell of a gutsy cat. Had an experience one day whilst out walking my two dogs - husky and border collie down the road, this cat flew out of a garage and literally dealt to my dogs in a big way, took me and dogs by surprise. The cat's owner stood at the gate and just stared when I laughingly commented "hell that is one plucky cat" she just looked at me and walked away. Loved the cat's attitude but can't say the same for the owner. And no my dogs did not retaliate at all

Went around to a friends place one night and took our large and well built boxer dog (which are great family dogs too). We knocked on the door and no sooner had it been opened by our mate when his cat came flying out the door and wrapped itself - claws and all - around the head of our bewildered dog! From the way he was shaking his head around we thought the dog would chew the cat to pieces. In reality the dog couldn't get his mouth open because of the way the cat was latched on with its claws. Then just as suddenly as the cat attack had begun it ended with the cat giving a final frenzy of clawing and biting and then detaching itself and running back inside leaving our dog in a state of shock like 'What the hell was that!?!?!' Our friend then explained that the cat had just had kittens and was instintively protecting its family. Fair enough.

Maybe they'd seen the cat perform similar antics (successfully) in the past?

I had a half siamese that would take on dogs, plural. I watched him chase several dogs up a hill one night. He also used to take on Possums, for fun.

My current alpha boy (feline) takes on pretty much anything that "threatens" his colony, especially his Alpha Female (me). I've also seen him take on a Foxy that had his little sister bailed up.

However, he doesn't see either Mr Bunny or our bluey Hermes as threats, he sees them as part of the colony and will protect Mr B from other cats and snuggles up with Hermes. Too Cute!

The bear knows he'd have seriously sore nose if he tried anything. See those jabs by the cat - lightning fast!

My family had an elderly ex-tom cat that did very little except sleep. He'd come from a home that had dogs and knew all about them. And we had a visitor, complete with dog that knew all about cats.

The dog spotted the cat and raced off into the bedroom barking loudly. The cat ignored it totally. One very puzzled dog barked even louder and started to run at the bed. Cat opened one yellow eye and just glared, then shut it again.

Dog backed off a little and kept on barking. Cat opened both eyes, stood straight up, stiff-leg marched across the bed, jumped onto floor, stomped towards dog (which by now had stopped barking in surprise). Cat jumped like 2 feet in air, smacked dog across the nose with claws out, turned round, marched back to the bed, jumped up again and settled down to sleep.

Leaving one whimpering dog with blood gushing from its nose all over the carpet. Agitated owner quickly removed the dog, which was never allowed to visit again.

This sort of thing probably isn't all that uncommon. What really made it for us though was the cat's advanced age - I think it was about 16 - and the totally annoyed look the cat managed to project. But maybe you had to be there.

I have a cat named Talon, he is nearly 2 years old. We live on a quiet suburban street where it is not uncommon to see dogs frequently strolling past the house. Talon is not afraid to go after thest dogs and actually chase them down the street. I'm not talking about small dogs either. He's taken on labradors, retrievers etc.

However one day i'm sure he'll meet his match, lets just hope he's smart enough to run :)

Me and one of my dogs, a large breed were attacked by a cat. Afterwards, the young owner said "she likes my Grandmas dog". She didn't make contact with my dog, but I have scars.

The cat's name was Angel ;o)

We had a cat when I was a child that got chased up a tree by 2 visiting german sheppards, they then got shut in the car and our cat then proceeded to walk all over the car roof hanging his tail down the (closed) windows, peering in the windows stirring the dogs up - think he got his revenge. Our other cats since then have all taken on dogs/possums behaving like they are really a tiger and not a domestic cat - they are convinced they are the superior species and all inferior species should bow down and idolise their greatness!!
