The dignity of dogs (or not)

If cats are works of art, arranging their sculpted selves all around your home, then what are dogs? I think they must be like those optical puzzles - the ones that look like either a young or an old woman depending on how you squint. Because with a dog, one moment it's a stirring portrait of power and dignity, and then (squint a bit) it's a clown falling on its bum.

Then a bit of dignity shines through; then it's a cartoon character again, snapping at a moth or fleeing its own fart.

So here are some moments of dignity and some moments where the dignity is let down a bit. And some moments with a little of both.

Cover-dog is Expo, a former agility dog whose interests include swimming, tennis balls and road trips.

Bandit's a purebred English Staffordshire Bull Terrier who's turning 5 this year.

Stately poses that went slightly awry... Pebbles (left) and Clay the curious Kelpie.

The sculptural lines of Sam the Greyhound (adopted through Greyhounds as Pets). Thanks for the photo, Falyn.

Sunlit and jewelled with seawater, Bella is like some glamorous Bond girl - though Halle Berry never licked her nostrils that way.

Sam

Chloe was bought unwittingly from a puppy mill, but has turned out to be a great house dog (if a bit of a rascal), according to owner Alex.

Thirteen-year-old Tom still loves to be among his toys.

Being a Rottie pup is a serious business for Lucifer, who's no longer a "little" Lucifer.

The majestic Bullmastiff pose is only slightly undercut by the balletic bollard-balancing. Meanwhile, Morgan is itching to give you a muddy handshake.

When Buddy the German Shepherd pup is alert to something, his ears actually applaud. The sprinkler-hugging terrier is named Elsa.

The calm poise of Jess.

The beautiful face of Moss, a much-loved family pet till her death last year. RIP Moss.

Fixing the camera with a mysterious gaze are Miley Bear (left) and Buddie.

Arlo would likie to be a few feet taller.

Barney's a nearly-year-old retradoodle, and with all that hair it's no wonder he likes to chill outside or in the water.

Harden your heart to that gaze if you can - Clover is an English Cocker Spaniel and I'm told her nature is as lovely as her looks.

Here's our beefcake centrefold for the day - Rosco.

Finally, meet Samson the British Bulldog pup, as solid as the tree stump he's sunning himself on. Thanks for the photo, Michelle.

Love Tom, surrounded by his toys, very cute!

Love that picture of Buddy - what amazing ears!

That's a relatively dignified picture of Barney; I sent through lots of him in stranger and very much less dignified poses, so it looks like they didn't make it through the interwebs.

Hope is in sight for his Hairy Hotness - he's at the dog groomers right this minute, having his first trim before his birthday on Sunday. What's an appropriate gift for the dog who has everything? A birthday cake of meat?

Some gorgeous subjects this week. Thanks Nick and pet mums and dads for sharing your babies. Always great to see so many loved pets out there. RIP sweet Moss.

As they say, the eyes define the spirit of the beholder and this is so true with today's Furry Friday canine lineup. All too beautiful to pick a fave. Love 'em all.

I love Bandit's smile, it's brilliant. So much like my Lily.

Aweomse blog. Buddy the German Shepherd pup made me laugh out loud. I love it! He's all fuzz including his ears!!

Moss was a very beautiful looking dog. I also liked Rosco and Samson. British Bulldogs are such sweet dogs. My sister had one, but unfortunatly has just had to rehome her as her two children are terrified of her and she isn't getting the attention she deserves. I'm proud of my sister for recognising this and making the heartbreaking decision to rehome her - she really does love her dog still.
