Part of the furniture

There's something unreal about furniture stores, and I think it's the lack of animals. The stores always group the furniture in conversational clusters with coordinating rugs, coffee tables, throws and so on (which is of course what all our houses look like, all of the time). But you never see a cat lying on the $900 chair. Or a Greyhound roaching on the Italian leather upholstery. It'd be fun to see the furniture chains try this tactic of including pets in their displays, to bring a bit of gritty, furry realism.

Because pets love chairs, and they love couches. It's the bit of softness, the extra bit of height, the handy way in which the upholstery holds on to unwanted hairs, the fulfilling sense of preventing some human from sitting where they want. The feeling of being at home and in charge.

Audrey is at home in the cosy upholstery of this armchair.

Annie has an expanse of leather to stretch out on. Some pets find this surface too ... slidey.

The classic roaching pose, by Wilson the Whippet. Looks as though Wilson fell asleep while reading.

Sleepy faces: Barney has a chair, Alfie's taking up two parking spaces on the couch.

Stella, Alfa Romeo and Bentley have colonised this couch.

Reader Rachael sent this photo of her pets in serious rest mode. This photo also fulfils a pattern in Furry Friday posts, in that at least one photo has at least one remote controller in it.

The inseparable Watson and Teabag are caught mid-spoon.

Wason and Teabag

Lucy and Coco like to spoon too. Reader Morena sent this picture, saying that she'd never been much of an animal person till she got a puppy with her partner. "It has truly changed my life and our dogs are awesome."

Here's Otis (at the back) and his son Arnie.

Mouse has been on the blog before, and everything he does seems to have attitude - even occupying a chair.

Louie has stamped his personality on this seat too.

Vala sleeps cute.

Cats at ease: on the left is Paddy, then just a 900g kitten on his first day in a new home. On the right is the handsome Oscar.

This is Roxy, the next-door dog who loves to visit reader Brent for conversation and a little shut-eye.

So... dogs on beds. Opinions differ on the rights and wrongs. Me, I don't mind, given that my dogs are very small and generally there's space left in the bed for two humans. But when your dog's a Husky like Kris, it's a bigger commitment.

That hint of tortoiseshell between the pillows is named Poppy. The dramatic eyes belong to Dumpie. (This picture is dedicated to the folk who follow this blog through The Daily Kitten, because I know they'll love it!)

Just what an Italian Greyhound needs in winter - a couch and plenty of blankets. This is Babette.

Meet a girl named Mister. After last year's February earthquake in Christchurch, her owners left her behind, so she was taken in by their neighbour Lou. "It took ages for her to trust me, and allow herself to be patted and picked up," says Lou. "She'll still let you know when she has had enough, and is a bit of a grump, but I think we are slowly winning her over."

Mister

Finally, Moglet loves a well-padded chair, especially as she prefers to sleep on her head.

Amazing pics this FF. Thanks Nick and pet mums and dads for sharing your little ones enjoying comfort on furniture. Delightful.

Our late old border collie Elvis had his own bed, placed at the foot of our bed. It was a basket with blankets and pillows. Every night without fail, from puppyhood to old fella, he'd make up his bed to the way he wanted it for sleeping, sometimes taking up to ten minutes or so to get it just right. We'd hear him rummaging, pulling his bedding around in his creaking basket. RIP my darling Elvy boy.

OMG! i just had to do a double take on the Watson and Teabag - someone has stolen my dogs! Gunny (who has featured before) and Linc are our two GSP's and they are identical to Watson and Teabag! I love Louie this week - adore his pose! Have a fabulous furry friday peeps!

lol..Miglet gave me a giggle. I love it when cats do this. They get so sleepy and then they just slowly get lower and lower to the ground until that happens.

I also love Audrey. Such a pretty photo.

Of course pets sleep on furniture - isn't that what humans have it for? Great idea for furniture shops to have instore pets!

Way too much cute in one go! I love little Paddy...that is a smile of a cat who absolutely loves his new home. What a great start to my Friday :)

The favoured chair in our lounge is the one at the computer chair. Its far from the most comfortable in the room, but the cats seem to recognise the importance it holds, as either myself or my partner is usually occupying it. This despite the fact that I built them a tower, with scratching posts, a ramp, 3 levels, and fully carpeted!

I think that it is appropriate too that you always have a picture of at least one remote. Our cats seem to understand the importance of these as well, as they like to sit on, attack, and generally own the remotes as well.

As for the dogs on the bed question, I am not wholey against it. But given that our two small cats manage to take up almost as much room as that husky, there really wouldnt be much room for a dog.
